Newbie Ammo Question

Question:

".22lr, or 22 long rifle is your basic plinking gun.  It’s a very weak ammo and is only good for hunting small stuff like racoons, rabbits, etc…  The good side is that the ammo is very cheap.  I’ve seen bricks of 500 rounds for $6 at big 5.  The .22lr is a rim fire round, meaning that there is no primer in the center of it, the hammer can hit anywhere on the back of it to fire. The other .22’s are centerfire rounds (not sure about the hornet) meaning that they have a primer.  In size, the .22lr is under 1", but the centerfire rounds are much longer and more powerful.  .223 is the caliber used in M16’s and AR15’s.  Basically a .22lr is for rabbits, but the centerfires can be used to drop coyotes.  They also are more acurate because they don’t drop off as much at long ranges. Dont try to use any round in a rifle not designed for it.  Rifles are made to fire 1 and only 1 caliber.                                        <~!~Dimitri~!~>" He did an excellent job of answering the newbie’s question with the exception of probably forgetting that the .22 mag. (I am assuming the original writer was referring the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire a.k.a. .22 mag.) is also a rimfire round.  The .22 Hornet is, as he suggested, a centerfire.
