# #   I am a novice deer hunter, I’m getting ready to hunt for my second # season. My knowledge of firearms is semi-limited, and I need some sound # advice.  Right now I have an SKS, it’s a 7.62 X 39 or what I’ve always called # a 308 cal.  I plan to sell it and I need to know what kind of gun is best for # Oklahoma brush country. I’ve always wanted a 243, but I know a 270 would have # way more knock down power.  Other sources tell me that a 30-06 it the only # way to go, but I don’t look to make hunting an expensive hobby.  The deer in # my neck of the woods have never been monsterous, except for the lucky few who # only get spotted once every year.  I have a 30-30, but it is in too good of # shape to hunt with for a 50 year old Winchester.  It was a hand me down, and # will be a collectors item someday I hope.  My SKS is a good gun, don’t get me # wrong. It shoots straight and very fast, and is somewhat accurate.  I’m just # tired of having a Japanese made gun and am looking for a true hunting rifle. # I need something with a good combination of knock-down, accuracy, and  medium # to long range.  Other questions that arose were types of bullets.  What is # the best grain for a deer hunter to use?  Should I go with hollow or solid # points?        As any of you that read this may see, my knowledge of guns and # ammo is very, very limited.  I haven’t killed a deer yet, and I hope to this # season. But then again, don’t we all ?  I would very much appreciate  any # advice andd info I get from all of you. Consider a Tikka Whitetail Hunter in a .270, You’ll find these in the $460.00 range. They are made by Sako and the quality and workmanship are supurb. These rifles have one of the smoothest bolts you can find. For accuracy, these rifles are one of the most accurate "out of the box" rifles on the market today. Recently, Gun Test Magazine tested the Tikka against the Weatherby and Sako (30-06) and the Tikka got the No. 1 post for accuracy. These rifles are are made and Finland! Give them a look! If your ranges are short, up to 150 yards, I would go with the 30-30 (in a new gun) or a 45-70…  an excellent hard-hitter.  For an all around gun, I like the 308.  Short action and nearly equalls the ‘06 in power (only 75fps less).  My 308 was a Browning BLR.  Excellent short range performance and could reach out to 300 yds for one of those big bucks that only come out once a year. Happy hunting, Mike Right now it’s your choice to own a gun.  Do nothing and it will soon be someone else’s choice. It’s about the equivalant of a .30-30 and is good out to about 150 yards. If you simply want a new rifle and cartridge that offers more hunting options take a look at the Savage 110 in .270 or .30-06. They are economical and plain looking but very accurate. They have heavy trigger pulls but that can be adjusted. If you have the money, the Remington 700 or Winchester model 70 are very nice. Best thing you could do is get some of the folks you know to let you shoot their rifles and experience the handling and recoil before you spend your money. Good hunting and good luck this year.
