Muzzle loading question
Question:
Consider the rifling in your bbl. "Typically" a slower twist, lik 1 in 64 shoots round balls and a faster twist like 1 in 28 does better with conicals or sasbots. Besides accuracy, consider the potency of the round on your game animal. I like the Barnes 250 or 300 sabot. I know they’re expensive but I spent more than that on gas for the average weekend hunt and they really drop an animal quickly. > snip > muzzle loading season. I’m glad to see that at least someone else here advocates using lower amounts of powder for more accurate shooting. I would also add that if you bought a new-in-box ML it hsould have a set of instructions with it that state about how much you should use. But you are definitely correct in saying that you have to experiment with different loads for optimal accuracy. Once you hit on a combination of bullet /sabot and charge of powder, my advice is to stick with it regardless of the type of shooting. My current ML uses 65 grains with a 340 g sabot. Go to a range and try loading different loads. I used to shoot a LOT of Muzzleloaders and always followed the following rule: Target, general shooting: 1 grain of powder per caliber and 1 round ball (50 cal = 50 grain powder) Hunting: 2 grain of power per caliber and 1 round ball (50 cal X2 = 100 grain powder) I used to shoot a two band Enfield a LOT. It was a .58 caliber weapon. I used 60 grains for target and general shooting practice with the right round ball and patch. Kicked butt at 50 yards. For hunting, I used 120 grains and a round ball and patch. Also kicked butt and me too! BUT, both were accurate and reliable. You MUST go to the range and experiment. Takes time and different powder levels. Measure accurately and you fill find the best load. Fletch Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Merle, I have found that most all .50 cal muzzle loaders shoot very well with the standard .490 round ball. I have a TC Hawken and my friends have a CVA. Also my uncle has a CVA, they all shoot better groups with a roundball/patch, 80 to 100 grains of Pyrodex and CCI caps. The 175gr roundball will put the hurt on any deer size game. Try them before you spend a bunch of money on other types. Also, you can’t beat the roundball for cheap target shooting and breaking in your new rifle.
