I haven’t had a lot of experience shooting black powder up until a year ago. My day and I decided to give black powder hunting a try. We purchased Inline Gonic Magnum’s and found a load of 130grains to be the most consistant load shooting a 465grain Gonic Penetrator slug. We found that we could hold 3-round groups of 4inches at 100yards, very good for open sights. Our first year had my dad dropping a nice three point at 130yards and I dropped a really nice three point at around 95yards. Neither one of the animals went more than 30yards and dropped dead. These Gonic Magnum’s are fantastic, with awesome ballistics. They are very effective up to 200yards with a lot of knockdown power, although at 150yards and 200 yards they do drop about 8inches and 18inches respectively so you have to know where your loads drop, but they really do the job with knockdown power. You can gain a little more flatness and knockdown power with 140 – 150 grains of powder(150 is max load), however, we found that for this little extra gain you get a lot more pain (recoil). We think that 130 grains is plenty. Check into the Gonic Magnum, it really is a fantastic inline black powder rifle. Happy hunting, and we’d love to hear about anyone elses experiences with the Gonic Magnum. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Yea, I think the "Quick Load" barrel has sold me on T/C. Aint the Net great !, I now know more than 90% of the "sales men" in the gun dept’s of the local gun shops and sporting stores. Now the question is : The "Thunder Hawk" has a 1:38" twist and The "Black Diamond" has a 1:28" twist shots ?? Thanks, Nick Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Depends on what *type* of bullet you are going to shoot. If you are going to use a conical or a sabot-type load . . . then I would go with the faster rifling (1:28). IMO. Personally, I own <and use!!> a TC White Mountain Carbine with a 1:20 rifling. Works wonders with conical bullets or saboted bullets! — Kevin Hall in Central Florida Favorite Bumper Stickers Part-time Fishing/Hunting Guide "Will Fish for Cigars!" Last Year I used a ML barrel on My Mossberg 500, but over 50 yds the open sights didn’t hack it ( or My eye’s did’nt) I plan on getting a basic inline (nothing fancy) and putting a scope on it, to keep as a dedicated ML gun (instead of the all in one Mossberg) looking to spend $100 – $200, checked out the local Walmart, they had about 5 CVA’a $99 – $199 and and 2 T-C’s $199 ? any one with any thoughts or experience with CVA AND T-C ? also any suggestions for a scope 2-4 power ? red dot ? looking for 50-100 yd shots. Many thanks and SAFE hunting (take a youngster along this year) Nick Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

T/C always makes a quality product. But, there are other styles and manufacturers to choose from that offer quality muzzleloaders in your price range. Lyman makes the Cougar inline around $150.00, and, Traditions sells the Lighting Bolt-action for around $165.00. Or, blackpowder guns are not restricted by the same laws that apply to regular firearms and can be mail ordered, check Cabela’s. Look around for the one that appeals to you. Check out some of the online gun auctions and you may find a good buy on a more expensive inline that is little used. For shots up to 100 yards, use a low power scope. 1 1/2 power is a good choice. It gives you a wide field of view, allows you to get on target quick and you get the optical assistance of a scope. Safe hunting is no accidents. I bought the CVA Hunter bolt $169.00 at wal-mart the optics are great it shoots good the only thing wrong is the trigger is very hard to pull and it doesn’t have an adjustment. I have TC side locks that are great I have near tried the in-line but I don’t think you can go wrong with a TC. Scopes I don’t know I hunt in Georgia and we can’t use scopes.
