Mini 30 for hunting?
Question:
Ok, before all the AR owners start beating me up. Let me say I have an 2 AR’s in .243 & .308 they are awesome. Okay got that out of the way. I recently came in possession of a mini 30. It holds a 1.5 inch group at 50 yards and opens up to around 3 inches at 100 yards. Has anyone in the Ng tried the 7.62×39 for hunting? I’m thinking for coastal Blacktail or feral pigs. I’ve used a 30-30 for both with good results. Since the shot for both of these is usually well under 100 yards. And with its size I thought it might make a nice little brush gun. Also if anyone has hunted with this round did you use the surplus ammo that’s so prevalent (the rifle came with 1000 rounds of hollow point "hunting ammo") Appears to be FMJ but hollow pointed. I don’t intend to used FMJ’s for hunting. But most of the ammo I’ve seen in the same type I have(FMJ hollow point). If you’ve used this type what kind of penetration did you get? How well did it expand? Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I don’t have direct experience with the mini-30, but I think my chopped up sporterized K-98 8mm is probably comparable. The .308 is probably even a better round than the 8mm Mauser, and my Mauser has no problem knocking the crap out of pigs. I use a 170gr JSP, and considering the expansion and penetration, I think I could use it on deer. I also hunt within 100 yards with this gun….good brush gun just like you’re talking about. I think the mini-30 would be very adequate for what you want to do. Got questions? Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. Is there somewhere on the West coast where you can hunt both? D.R. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I have used a Chinese SKS as a foul weather gun for deer and hog many times and never had a problem. You can find surplus 7.62×39 hunting ammo as it is called for same price as the FMJ stuff. Only problem with some of the surplus ammo I have seen in the SKS is some is pretty hot loads and you get occasional slam fires with it but other than that it works fine, last a long time, especially when the weather is sloppy and you don’t want to ruin an expensive gun. Actually yes, there is allot of coastal land that’s BLM or National forests. In plus good number of farmers and vineyards that want them removed from their property (pigs that is). If you want to hunt both in CA. Stick to the A zones on the F&G deer zone map. The deer aren’t very big or plentiful but there are opportunities and plenty of pigs. The test goes like this: Fire a round through a plastic jug full of water. Then fire your 30-30 through a plastic jug full of water. Compare the results. You’ll know right away if it’s hunting ammo or army surplus. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
