M6 Scout .22lr/.410 combo…Observations & Recomendations??

Question:

Bigger is not always better. I have taken LOTS of small game armed with just a .22 rifle. I’m not planning on hunting bear, either, LOLOL! Tell me, in all your time in the woods, how often  have you seen a bear, or bear tracks? I never have. Head shots with a .22lr can take mule deer. I’ve witnessed it. I’ll take the M6 Scout over a thompson contender anyday, thank you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I have the opportunity to get one at the right price >(149.00). I have the opportunity to get one at the right price (149.00). I’ve always been interested in this particular rifle. I’m interested in this rifle from a purely survival standpoint, and I don’t have any experience with .410. Can I expect to take mule deer with a slug and buckshot combo? What kind of range should I expect to get out of this type of ammunition (I expect it to be under 40 yards) The stock can hold 4 rounds of .410, and 14 rounds of .22 long rifle. What would be a good mix of ammunition combinations? I’ve thought about mounting an aimpoint scope on it. Any thoughts? The 410 slug has the same power as a 357 magnum (maybe), but lacks the penetration The only buck shot load you should even think about is the 000 buck load,, they come in 3 and 4 balls to the shell. Now a little secrete about shooting them.  I have the 3 ball loading and when they are fired the first two hit close together , but the third buck shot always fly REAL HIGH. Think it’s the third one anyway, and I think it is due to the last ball being in the barrel when the big recoil effects hit the gun, just as the shot is leaving. (this is from being shot out of the M6) Now I can only say,  at the best , two of the 000 bucks will hit the deer. 000 buck is really just a 36 caliber round ball, moving slower than fired from black powder rifle. I was in the emergency room with my wife one afternoon when they brought in a man that had been gored in the leg by an 8 point buck. It seams he had put 2, 410 slugs into this deer at  very close range from his double barrel 410, it really pissed off that deer.  I did not ask him where he hit the deer with those rounds, as he was in quite a bit of pain, but he did say the deer won. I also never did hear if the deer was recovered later This is the only direct information I have on using the 410 for deer, I know not much, but I do own a M6 and do love it > What kind of range should I expect to get out of this type > of ammunition (I expect it to be under 40 yards) The stock > can hold 4 rounds of .410, and 14 rounds of .22 long rifle. > What would be a good mix of ammunition > combinations?

7 1/2 shot for the 410,, good snake gun On the LR,, what ever is cheapest,, as you will shoot it a lot :-) > I’ve thought about mounting an aimpoint scope on it. Any > thoughts?

They say this works well on the M6,, the sights are not much ,, but mine in hornet hit right on Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

The M6 is a cheap, less-than-effective firearm.  In a real survival situation, you can probably use some of the steel parts to fabricate a decent spear and club.  In bear country, it would be useless against the brown bruins. A better, although more expensive alternative is a Thompson Center Contender in 45 LC.  The 45 LC can be loaded hotter than a 44 Magnum. you can also shoot 410 shotshells in it.  So, you would use the 410 shells for small game (7-1/2 shot) and a 250-300 grain 45LC for larger game. I’ve seen lots of bear on both sides of the Mississippi.  And you are right – you can kill a mule deer with a head shot with a 22lr – but even you have to admit you can’t do it reliably.  The M6 sights suck. Why trust your life to a less capable tool in a survival situation? Is your life worth less than than the $200 price differential? ..P Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
