Yes, there is only one gun hunt in Jan – the 30 & 31. However, there are other Mgt. Areas within driving distance that have hunts on other days. >We will probably fly US Air from New York to Alabama (or possibly to >Atlanta, GA and drive from there) – what should we expect in terms of bow >and firearms transport? >Do we need some sort of permit to transport our firearms from NY to AL?
I don’t think AL will bother you, don’t know about those Yankees. >I have doskocil locking hard-sided cases for my bow and rifle – is this >good enough for airline transport?
Should work fine. >Should we ship our portable tree stands and hunting gear separately ahead >of time? or try to take it with us on the plane? >As I recall, the rut is occurring at this time of the year in some >portions of Alabama, but is this the case in Bullock/Barbour counties?
The rut will still be going on, and should be near the peak. I hunt in Perry Co. and the peak there is usually around the 20th. >Should we get our non-resident licenses in advance or when we arrive?
Most any place will have them. >Any other travel tips for hunting gear would be GREATLY appreciated.

A hunting partner and myself are considering a week-long self-guided deer (and possibly other game) hunt in southeastern Alabama (Bullock and Barbour Counties) in January 1998. I have the game regs (from the Alabama GFD www site) and license fee information and a place to stay with 40 private acres to hunt on, but we would also like to hunt in the Barbour County Game Management Area if we can get some info on some possible locations in this 15,000 acre public facility to hunt. We are just in the throws of planning our trip and would appreciate any and all information we can get as this is our first long-term hunting trip away from our homebase. We want to bring along our bows and rifles (we understand that rifle season is bucks only in January and that bow is either sex) and hunt with one weapon or the other at different times. It is not clear to me, but it appears that the BCWMA is bow-only for the month of January with a couple of rifle/gun days (is this correct)??? We will probably fly US Air from New York to Alabama (or possibly to Atlanta, GA and drive from there) – what should we expect in terms of bow and firearms transport? Do we need some sort of permit to transport our firearms from NY to AL? I have doskocil locking hard-sided cases for my bow and rifle – is this good enough for airline transport? Should we ship our portable tree stands and hunting gear separately ahead of time? or try to take it with us on the plane? As I recall, the rut is occurring at this time of the year in some portions of Alabama, but is this the case in Bullock/Barbour counties? Should we get our non-resident licenses in advance or when we arrive? Any other travel tips for hunting gear would be GREATLY appreciated.
