Tom, My wife cleaned up my office/den for a change and now I can’t find my handy-dandy little slide rule that tells what speed and energy you have left at 150 yards using 90 grs of Pyro. Needless to say it was enough, wasn’t it? That’s what Fred Miller calls "terminal energy". How come I never can find elk that stupid or suicidal? Yup. Sure can. Couple years ago, my baby sister thumped a cow elk with yer husband’s .54 cal TC Renegade Hunter, using a patched round ball and about 90 grains equivalent of Pyrodex RS (downloaded ’cause she didn’t like the recoil) at just over 150 yards. They didn’t think it was that far when she shot they thought it was about 90 yards … it stood there and let her miss 5 times and walk her shots in by watching the mud splash before the 6th shot hit. (Suicidal elk?) Anyway, the ball went though one shoulder, broke a rib or two, and stuck under the hide on the off side. The elk sorta tippy toed around in a circle and fell over dead. The guy who owns the muzzleloader shop where I buy my supplies shoots his elk with a .54 and round balls pretty regularly, so I don’t think this is a fluke. Well, my Knight Wolverine did it’s job and did it well, once again. Friday evening I shot a small doe at approx. 70 yds with it. I was using a 300 gr Precision Rifle 315 Flatliner HP bullet and 110gr of FFg. The bullet broke two ribs goin in, took out both lungs and took two more ribs going out. Distance to recovery was approx. 50 yds with a blood trail a baby could follow. I keep hearing they can’t get the job done, but that little gun has provided me with 4 deer in 3 years and accounted for a 5th deer in the hands of a friend.
