All the deer that I shot (3) have been with a bow, and they all have stuck there tail between there legs as they ran away. Will Fox Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Rodney, Same goes with a bow.  If the deer flags as it runs off…it’s not injured. I’ve never shot one with a bow that didn’t tuck it’s tail down after it was shot. Charlie Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Yes it is exciting, but you must make absolutely sure you missed the animal,, Many first time deer hunters make the mistake of thinking they missed, because they saw no reaction , except the deer ran like hell .  I not saying that you did not make absolutely sure that you missed, but This is a good chance to share this information with others that are new to the sport.  You must go to the exact spot the deer was standing when you fired at it.  You must look very closely at the ground and any growth that is nearby, you are looking for any sign’s of blood, but you are also looking for sign’s of hair,, you must then follow the tracks of the animal at least 100 yds if you can,, examining the ground and the brush looking for hair or blood,, mostly blood at this point. I have been on many hunts where a shooter had fired and said they missed, and  I went back with them and found blood and usually find the deer a short distance away.  This is a common mistake made by new hunters and I’m afraid by old hunters as well, who are used to their cannons knocking the deer down.  This does not always occur. One indication that has always worked is whether the deer flags you as they run away, a startled deer will run with his tail sticking straight up and waving back and forth, this is a warning to other deer that there is trouble.  I have never seen a wounded deer run away this way, they instead have their tails down.  SInce I have never shot a deer with a bow, I do not know if they react the same way when stuck with an arrow, but maybe some bow hunters will give their experiences of this. Make sure of your scope,, and practice some more, and always use some kind of rest when firing at any deer over 100 yds away Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
