Hunting with HK 91

Question:

I’m heading to Alaska for fly fishing and hunting trip.  Between the different guns I own, the guide said to bring the HK 91 along.  Plenty of power and firepower.  I told him I reloaded and he sugested I do some 130,165, 180 or 190 gr. bullets.  I was a little surprised by this but when he started to yap about the rain, cold, terain, and that the HK would do better because the .300 win mag I’ve got may warp.  (Wood)  Also If we took a spill (horse) and it hit the ground, then even if the scope is busted, I’ve got "excelent" iron sights.  (his words).  He also said contrary to popular belief, if I can hit the animal where it counts, the .308 win. is plenty powerfull.  It all sounded pretty good to me, though I never would have thought of it myself.  Anyone care to commit? Sounds like fun! Check the hunting regs line by line, a few states (PA?) say no semi-autos for hunting. Many states (AZ) say 5 round magazines. And I’ve heard AK can be very hostile to non-res hunters for even what appears to be minor paperwork/technical violations. One risk, are you gonna be able to see that Sika Blacktail partially hidden up in those bushes 175 yards away in the drizzling rainy fog near dusk with those excellent iron sights? If you’re hunting anything bigger, use premium bullets. On the other hand, you could use this as an opportunity to justify buying a stainless synthetic [insert favorite caliber here] and premium waterproof scope! Good hunting! : First check with HK and see if your rifle can be used with factory loads. : At one time military rifles chambered in 7.62 NATO were not rated for use : with .308 Win ammo, as it produced a different pressure curve than the : NATO rifles were designed for.  This may have changed.  If HK says "okay", should not be a problem using .308 factory loads, but contacting HK is excellent advice. : then think about using the 180gr. Winchester Fail Safe.  I’d prefer a .300 : Mag.  You might have the stock free floated and the action pillar bedded. : That would reduce concerns about warpage considerably. Apparently you have not seen a HK91. The barrel on a 91 is essentially free floating already. (not quite, but close) and you could not modify it without destroying the weapon. "pillar bedding" simply does not apply to this weapon. BTW, most  HK 91/SR9/SR9T …etc already shoot just fine from the factory. (in terms of hunting accuracy) I say go for it. but remember to leave the 20 rounders at home and use the 5 round mags. good luck on your hunt! Just a comment on the HK91. I don’t why anyone would suggest bringing that particular rifle along up here. Do you have 5-round magazines. That’s all you can hunt with. Your .300 winmag will work wonderfully. It’s what I use in all weather for all large game and besides hunting year round for the family I’ve also guided for Brown Bear and Goats and in 20 years have not seen anyone needing a .308 or .223 when the going gets rough. Maybe as a backup weapon or to knock down a caribou with it just to say you did might be fun but there’s no more reliable gun in Alaska than a good old bolt action. Happy hunting, M.
