Mine is a Ruger Super Blackhawk with the 7 1/2 inch barrel. It is considered to be one of the strongest built of the 44 Mags out there. With this handgun you would have to consider changing grips. I have been using the Pachmayr Presentation grips for longer than I can remember but just last week put on a set of Pachmayr Decelerators. These feel better than the Hougue Monogrips but a few more sessions at the range will tell me if I have to go back to the presentations. While the other recommendations are good, one thing to consider is cost and a good condition Super Blackhawk is still available for under $200.00 with a little looking.      Big game hunting with handguns requires extreme stalking skills. Just pick any pistol you like and stay within your limitations.      Here’s a handy guide for the practical killing range of a variety of handguns on deer sized game: 9mm Luger——-2 feet 357 Magnum—-10 yards 40 automatic—–15 yards 44 magnum (4" bbl) 40 yards 44 magnum (71/2" bbl) 50 yards Hope that helps. Super blackhawk is great. Took a deer with it last year. It only went 20 yards before dropping. Missed one before that at sixty yards. Be sure to put a scope on it for better aim. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Ruger can’t be beat for hunting.  (Don’t buy Smith & Wesson.  They don’t want you to have their guns.) My recommendation is the Ruger Redhawk 7 1/2" barrel, not the "super-".  Just be sure you get the version that is milled for scope mounts.  Get the high profile scope rings so you won’t have to remove your rear sight to use the scope.  I have the Redfield 2.5x EER scope.  This combination has served me well for years, and it’s still tight as a drum.  Set up this way, you can remove the scope and use iron sights as you like, and not have to re- zero the scope when it’s re-installed. I do NOT recommend TC pistols chambered for rifle rounds.  While very good, they are not for beginners.  I also use the 6" Desert Eagle .50AE with a HoloSight.  I also do NOT recommend this one for beginners of pistol shooting.  It’s hard enough to shoot handguns accurately at first, let alone throwing in hunting scenarios. >  Since I have never owned a > pistol before I am in need of expert advise and figured this is the > place to get it.  If anyone has a recommendation I would love to hear > it.

You can’t expect to pick up a handgun and hit the field with it.  It takes practice – LOTS of practice.  If the full magnum loads are too stiff for practice, use 44 special loads most of the time.  Beware the flinch monster!  Be sure to check your scope’s zero at every ammo change.  Practice at the actual ranges you expect to see deer.  Know where your ammo prints at more and less ranges, too. Personally, I use handloads, but used to use Remington 240gr JHP’s for hunting.  With it, I have taken deer at over 100 yards offhand.  I don’t recommend this for beginners.  Keep your deer shooting range to the distance you can keep your groups fist-sized.  Generally, this is bow-hunting range – 40 yards or less. > Please email me your responses. > Thank you, > Jim Willson

If you’ve never owned a revolver (pistols are semi autos) before, I’d recommend you start small (.357) and work up to at least a .44 mag.  (I’m assuming you don’t handload).  With the .357, start shooting .38 specials and practice, practice, practice.  When you can consistently put them all in the bullseye at 25 yds, step up to .357 mag loads and work your way out to 50 yds.  Repeat the process with 44 specials and finially full house 44 mag loads at 50 & 75 yds. If you can do that, then your ready.  One hint, have a buddy load the revolver for you and don’t fill all the chambers all the time.  Concentrate on sight picture, trigger squeeze and try not to flinch.  If you develop a flinch, it will be obvious when you hit an empty chamber. I picked up my 44 Ruger Super Blackhawk from a young man who wouldn’t follow my advise and load down his ammo (he reloaded).  It too, was the first handgun he had ever owned.  His first shot was close, his second further off and his third, well, you get the picture.  Worst flinch I’ve ever seen.  I ended up trading him a deer rifle for it and his dies. One last thing, I had Ruger screw a 10 1/2 barrel on mine and put Herret’s smooth grips on it.  It fits my hand, the barrel makes Metalic Handgun Silhouettes much easier to hit and I still have iron sights.  I haven’t killed a deer with it, yet, but have only hunted with it twice (mule deer).  One day I’ll probably scope it but it’s not my primary deer gun. I have two pet pistols.  The first is a Colt Anaconda with a magna-ported 8" barrel, scoped with a burris 1.5 posilock EER.  The second is a Ruger Super BlackHawk with a 5.5" magnaported barrel, with standard iron sights.  Both of the weapons are 44mag.  I shoot 250gr.cast Keith type bullet on top of 20gr. or 21gr of 2400.  These weapons have taken approximately 50 animals combined.  Whitetail, Fox, Pig, etc.   If you are just starting in pistol hunting I would recommend the Super Blackhawk in stainless by Ruger.  I would recommend a fairly long barrel 7-8 inches. this gives you more stability. I am also a big fan of magna porting.  Have the stainless coated with Gun-Kote, Black,Tan,or Camo.  I do not like the look of stainless, but I like its properties.  I would then have a good trigger job done by a good gunsmith.  You will need to decide on sights.  Optics or iron.  I have opinions there also.  I would stay away from double action guns until you have hunted for awhile.   There is so much to tell you about handgun hunting I could type all day long. Email me direct with question and I can get more specific.  Good Luck!!! > Before you buy. > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: >         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Ruger Super Redhawk with a Leupold 2x EER scope.  I’ve been asking around for weeks, and the above gun/scope combination is the recommendation I’ve received over and over and over.  The extended frame allows the gun to handle powerful hunting ammo, and there is apparently ammo out there made specifically for the Super Redhawk. After much research and many many many questions, all I can say is, I can’t wait to get mine! Before you buy. 44 mag is more than enough for deer at reasonable pistol distances.  Pigs are a different story, but a 44 should still be enough if you shoot from a safe location like a tree stand.  Ammo needs to be considered and selected carefully.  Bigger pistols (Raging Bull by Tarus) are available but from what I see, too much for comfortable shooting for most people.
