Help! Need Guns & Airlines Info

Question:

First of all I want to again express my appreciation to so many of you whose responses helped me choose a rifle for my Canadian moose hunt.  So now I have the Classic Model 70 .30/06 and am practicing every chance I get. This morning I realized that I don’t have a gun case suitable for airline travel. I have about 60 days to come up with a good gun case.  Also, I’ve never taken a firearm through an airport, so have no idea what to expect at check-in.   I know that many of you have lots of experience flying with guns, so I would appreciate any information or ideas that you have regarding suitability of various brands of cases, (I think I want rugged and easy-to-handle over cheap), and also any tips you have dealing with airline personel or customs officials at the border. Cabellas offers an aluminum case by USA?  that is very nice for the 100+/- that it costs.  I bought one and have travelled multiple times withit and it worked well. Go to the airprot a little earlier that you normally do.  Get in line with your rifle in the case along with you other baggage.  They will ask questions is it unloaded etc and than ask you to sign a statement to the effect it is unloaded.  This card goes into the case so have you keys ready.  It really is no big thing with the major airlines.  I found in "hunting towns" Ancorage, Denver it is common and the folks behind the counter don’t even bat an eye.  I have checked in in Boston and there was a slight amount more ees raised but again no big deal. Be sure to call whatever airline you plan to use and ask about their procedures.  Each is slightly different, and individual at the counter can make their own rules as they go along if you do not know the official policy. Last time I had any problems I let the ticket agent play his little game because I had plenty of time.  Some days I may not have been so generous with his "attitude". I fly with a cheap case (meets standards) and have never had a problem, but since all gun cases look like gun cases, it is somewhat of an advertisement of the contents for those inclined to remove "excess" baggage from the system!!!! Call Brownell’s and order one of their heavy duty aluminium cases.  They run about $180, and are worth every dollar. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I like my Pelican (aptly labeled by Browning a Travel Vault) long gun case, though I yearn for the newer model with the little wheels on one end and a fold out handle at the other.  They are rugged but heavy.  As grow more, uh, mature I must admit I’ve spent some time contemplating one of the new heavy duty aluminum cases. Here in Dallas, Delta Airlines actually sells good hard rifle cases.
