Hearing Protectors

Question:

Gene, I too feared hearing damage from all the shooting I did.  I shoot sporting clays and also like to take my rifles to the range.  I knew I was okay practicing with cheap ear plugs and muffs, but I wanted something better which I could also use hunting.  After I picked up a BOSS equipped rifle, I had to make a choice.  While shooting sporting clays, I had often seen people using special ear muffs with small microphones built in.  I talked to a few of these people and got to try out a pair or two.  I then did some research.  Several manufacturers have come out with battery operated ear muffs with built in sound compression.  What this means is you can set the volume in each ear, (there is a small mic and volume switch on each side) and when a loud noise is picked up, the sound is compressed to an acceptable level. (Usually around 80dB)  I ended up purchasing a pair called "Pro Ears", but I know there are others out there.  Since I wanted to use them in a hunting application as well as target, I opted for the more expensive drab green model. They also claim that this model has increased sound pickup for better hearing in hunting situations.  I like them a lot, but tend not to turn them up too high when shooting sporting clays because hearing the sound of the shot landing in front of me is strange. If I remember correctly they where around $180.00.  I know this is expensive, but we only have one set of ears and I’d rather put off doing damage to my hearing as long as possible. Peltor Tac 6 Electronic.  Small and light.  They are kind of strange until you get used to them.  You can still hear the shot however the edge is gone of the noise.  It takes all the intensity out of it. Pro Mag LE, I actually hear better with them on.  Haven’t had to replace batteries yet, and all the parts are available should you need to fix ‘em.  They’re not a ’slim line’ muff, but _damn_ do they work. Try EarScopes. They are the hearing aid type. Not cheap, but I couldn’t gun hunt without them Woody Williams If you’re too busy to hunt, you’re too busy Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
