The best handgun out there for hunting is the 454 Casull. It’ll reach out as far as you’d ever want to handgun hunt, and it packs a wicked whallop. Mark

Haven’t hunted with my 15" .308 Encore yet but after a couple of months of practice, it shoots 2MOA with a 165gn Barnes X-bt. The practice is seriously important because my groups have went from 8MOA to 2 by keeping at it. With a scope the rule about sighting plane doesn’t really apply and the wobble is not much of a problem. Practice, practice, practice. This is not like any other handgun you have ever fired so keep at it and the results will impress you. One thing I have noticed is that the tighter you hold it, the less accurate you are. Just hold it firmly and let the recoil take care of itself; of course, it helps to have a truly long eye relief scope. Good luck and have fun! — TK I don’t practice what I preach ’cause I’m not the kind of person I’m preaching to.

I hunt every year with nothing but my Encore, I have it set up with .243 with a 2x-6x variable for open shots and woodchucks and I have a 7-08 barrel with open sights for woods hunting. Both have recoil about the same as a stout 44 mag,but it is manageable. As for being able to steady the gun free hand I can’t do it, I use a bipod or a tree or rest it between my knee’s. I would not take a shot at any game with out the aid of a rest anyway so I guess it doesn’t matter if I can’t steady the gun perfectly free hand. Either of the calibers I use are devastating on deer.(complete penetration lenghtwise) Good Luck Eric Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I have an Encore with 12" custom barrels in .45 Long Colt and .454 Casull. Between the two they will take any game on this continent with proper shot placement. Recoil with the Casull is hefty and I have mine fitted with a muzzle brake form MagnaPort Arms. With the Casull, a TSOB 4 ring mounting system for the scope is necessary if you don’t want the scope to move with every shot. Any longer barrel is unwieldy for carry. The factory grips did not fit me well and I had to fashion some of my own but that is my only complaint.
