Feedback on the 30/30
Question:
So I bought a Marlin 30/30 Lever and have put only about 6 rounds through it so far. Comments from people who have hunted with the 30/30. What’s been taken with it? Reliability for kills? Lay it on me. Doug Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

Lay it on me. I owned one once, sold it to a friend, and kept him as a friend. He wanted it to give to his son, when he became of age to hunt. I bought it because it was a bargain, I’m not a lever fan. It was the gun he used, it was the gun many of his friends use. That was quite a few years ago, and that gun, and ones like it, are responsible for many full freezers up here in Quebec. It’s a 30-30, the kill reliability is up to you, really. If you stay within the range and game size reccommended (within 200yds, on large deer) the 336 will do anything you ask it to do, if you ask correctly. I know of one that had a rough trigger, but a 50$ trip to the gunsmith fixed that. I’ve seen them group <2" at 100yds, and that’s REAL groups, ones I saw. More than accurate enough. Up here, the ‘94 is for people who want to brush hunt, but can’t afford a marlin… DJ MacIntyre in Quebec Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

I have used a 30/30 Marlin 336 for sometime now. Most of my hunting seems to be done in areas where the deer will sometimes have to come up and say hello before you can see him. Just kidding….. The Marlin is set up with a 4X fixed scope and see through mounts. Both sites are Zero at 100 yards. The rifle shoots around 1/2 inch high at 50 yards and about 2.5 to 3 inches low at 150 yards. The 30/30 has proven to be just as reliable as any other round I have used. No deer or hogs have laughed at or taunted me about the rifle and round I intend to use and shoot at them. Some of the guys I hunt with have. I just can’t see the need to sit in a palmetto swamp and shoot at a deer 40 yards away with a 300 Win Mag. (I can buy a box of 20 170 grain 30/30 for around $6.00). Six deer and three hogs have all been on the wrong end of the Marlin-30/30 combination. To date I have not shot any hunting buddies and cannot report on how fast they drop. I do believe that the 30/30 would be very effective on them also out to 150 yards or more. I can not see any difference when comparing those hit with my Ruger UltraLight .270. What I mean is they have all fallen down and died. (Those that I have hit, I have missed a some) I also cannot tell the difference at the dinner table which cut of venison was taken with the 30/30 or the .270. I do use the .270 when hunting over bean fields or pipelines with potential shots from 150 yards and over. It is nice to search for the one rifle fits all situation, but two specialized ones seem to fill my ticket better.

Lay it on me. There is more of everything dead (wild animal anyway) from the 30-30 than any other round ever fired. It is reasonable to believe that includes every species of animal in No. America but probable any Brown Bear killed was an emergency, or by a fool. On non-dangerous game at 100 yards it is pretty reasonable even on big stuff. Whatever you can say about better rounds, and many are better for different things, it is a solid work horse. The ammo is available everywhere but toys-are-us and inexpensive. And many think Marlin is the stronger make, if heavier than winchester. Enjoy your sensible purchase and eat well. # So I bought a Marlin 30/30 Lever and have put only about 6 rounds through it # so far. Comments from people who have hunted with the 30/30. Good pick. Put a good receiver sight on it, make sure the trigger is crisp and spend some quality trigger time at the range. The furthest range at which you can put six out of six on a paper dinner plate is _your_ maximum range. # What’s been taken with it? Almost everything. # Reliability for kills? If you hit your deer – or similar sized game – in the heart lung area it is very reliable.
