Extra/Super Full Turkey Chokes for squirrel
Question:
I like a really tight pattern for hunting squirrel. Right now I’m using a Full choke tube in my Rem 870 and I’m just not satisfied. I was wondering if anyone has tried using a Extra Full or a Super Full Turkey choke tube for hunting squirrel. Also can you shoot #4 lead shot through these tubes? I tried it, years ago, when I first started — using #6s, I think. Couldn’t hit ‘em worth beans. Went to IC, and have been doing much better. If you can actually use that choke, why not go to a scoped .22 instead, and take head shots? — Beartooth Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

In my Mossberg Model 835 Ulti-Mag, the EXTRA FULL TURKEY choke tube patterns a lot tighter with nos. 4 thru 6 shot than the FULL choke tube. I can’t imagine any reason why you shouldn’t be able to shoot #4 shot through any extra full or special turkey choke tube unless it is marked for steel shot only. Mo, I have shot a couple squirrels with x full and #5 turkey loads while fall turkey hunting, that teaches them to not give me up to the birds. However I have shot a lot of coyotes foxes and bobcats with #2 and BB #" loads with startling effects(to the critters, not me). Best bet is with a rifle sighted smooth bore slug barrel, that you have patterned and sighted in. Probably a very good idea to aim at the head while the rest of the squirrel is behind a tree. I see no problems safety wise using lead shot of any size thru x full though you will at some point lose pattern instead of gain. Lonny > I like a really tight pattern for hunting squirrel. Have used a xfull turkey choke in my 870 20 ga with great results – specially after the leaves fall. It will really reach out, but the close shots can be ruinous to the meat. I have found the the 4s push hair and hide into the meat also…I stay with 5s or 6s. Jim Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
