european mount
Question:
I used the Maggot Method, I Skinned the head and put it in a big bucket, and let the flys go to town. The maggots did a great job, and id do it again that way. Ive never saw such huge maggots after a few weeks. But it worked great for me. Recommend that you soak it in water 2-3 days before your boil (or use any other method like ants, beetles, etc,). Change the water daily. This soaks the blood out of the meat giving you a whiter skull initially. Recommend you boil it outside for the sake of family harmony if your married.

I would recommend the maggot method or the beetles if you can find them. I have tried the boiling method. It looks nice when done but is a real hassle. If you don’t want to leave your trophy head outside under a hedge or in a bucket (I wouldn’t want to) then I have put mine in a cheap styrofoam cooler with a bunch of maggots. This protects the head from mice and other creatures who may gnaw on the antlers. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Steve, it is really simple. I would suggest you do it outside on a fish fryer is what I use. I dont try to cut anything off prior to boiling, and I use plain water. Boil for several hours till hide pulls away easily. Scrape as much as you can from skull, then take it to your neighborhood car wash and blast the hell out of it. Let it dry for a few days the go to a beauty supply house and get some strong peroxide and brush it on untill you get the desired whiteness. I did this 2yrs. ago and no bad odors, and to tell you the truth, I like it better than my taxidermied (sp?) mount. Good luck! I had read that you boil it in vinegar and then scrub the small bits off. To whiten it you soak it in bleach. I tried it but somewhere I did something wrong because if you do either step too long it will remove the "glue" between the skull bones and it will fall apart. If you try it, I would practice on a head I wasn’t worried if it failed on. I use one of two methods. Either you can simmer the head in one of your wife’s best pans (the smelly method) or you can stick it in a bucket and introduce maggots – either from fishing tackle shops or from the native fly population. If I do the latter, I tend to leave the head under a convenient hedge, some distance from home. Dermestid beetles are the key. They clean any edible bits off and leave the bones and connective tissue intact. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I’m from Europe (Netherlands) and I do it with all my Roe skulls. Take of al the skin and flesh. Use a fine saw to cut the skull Boil the skull for several hours, so he is really clean (keep the the antlers out of the water) Use peroxide to whiten the skull. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text —— Original Message —– Newsgroups: rec.hunting Sent: Thursday, October 19, 2000 5:54 AM > Does anyone know how to remove the flesh from a deer head so I can mount it > skull, antlers and all? > I beleive this is called a European mount. > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: > http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Sure, I’ve done a couple of these. Get a large pot, put the skull in with as much meat trimmed off as possible. Fill the pot with water to the base of the antlers. Simmer until the meat gets soft and is easily scraped off. (Your wife will love you for this) You’ll need to go into the brain cavity and "goom" around in there with a butter knife or something to loosen up the brains to get them out. Bon Apetit

Remove as much flesh as you can from the skull. Get yourself some 20 Mule Team Borax and some baking soda. Boil (not to hard of a boil) the head in a solution of water/borax/baking soda. Use a coat hanger to scrape the brains out through the hole in the base of the head. (Pressured water can help in this area too) Rinse thoroughly. After all the flesh/brains are off the skull drop it into a tub of Peroxide just enough to cover the skull. Use a white tub if possible and leave it in a lighted area. Soak in peroxide for 24-36 hours. Let dry completely. Then a solution of Mop N Glo and water can be lightly sprayed on the skull to seal it. That’s about it. Of coarse another option is to use Beetles if you know of anyone with them. — Randy in Alaska Visit my page… http://home.gci.net/~randyinalaska Life Member, North American Hunting Club Life Member, North American Fishing Club Member, Varmint Hunters Association Member, Alaska Trappers Association Member, National Rifle Association Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
