dropping out for a while
Question:
I need to drop out as moderator for a while. Last Thursday night, I was involved in a head-on collision on my motorcycle. And while nothing was broken (amazingly, it was the kind of wreck that kill alot of people), I will be out of the office for a couple of weeks. Therefore, I need to reduce the volume of email I get, so I’m unsubbing from several lists, as well as dropping out as moderator for the time being. I will continue to read my email address, so if you need to get in touch with me, this address will still work fine. — + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Chris Barnes AOL IM: cnbarnes "A smart man learns from his own mistakes. Hi Chris, Sorry to hear about your accident – I didn’t even know you had a motorcycle! (Of course, I gave up on rec.motorcycles quite a few years ago due to the lack of signal in all the noise
) What kind of a bike do (did?) you have? Not too many people survive head-ons on a motorcycle (my wife is another one, but she gave up riding afterwards.) What happened? Anyway, I hope you make a speedy and complete recovery, and that you’ll be back on a motorcycle again real soon. Regards, -Bob | N.R.A. Chris, Thanks for the good work on this newsgroup. I hope you get to feeling better soon. I totaled a bike and fractured two vertebrae in my neck. T-Boned some lady who turned her Buick left in front of me. I bought a replacement bike and was riding it seven days later. Oh to be 21 again
. I didn’t realize I had been hurt until, 15 years later, a Doctor was looking over an X-ray of my neck and asked me, "When did you break your neck?". It’s not much of a bike – a Yamaha 180 (most people call them mopeds, but I could get it to 60 mph). > Not too many people survive head-ons on a motorcycle (my wife is > another one, but she gave up riding afterwards.) Other guy was in a turn lane coming from the other direction. He decided to pull out in front and attempt his left turn right in front of me. I hit his front bumper at ~ 40mph. I think the only thing that saved my life was that I flew over his car and landed on the street on the other side of his car. I ended up landing flat on my back – didn’t break anything, but still have ALOT of pain (nerve damage?). I’m waiting to see what the insurance company is going to do. As for getting back on a bike – well, my wife is wanting me to get a camper/trailer. Right now, I’m leaning to agree with her…. — + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Chris Barnes AOL IM: cnbarnes "A smart man learns from his own mistakes. Damn, Chris is lucky. TWO of my friends have been killed on motorcycles during the past month: – Lee Smith, owner of "Lee’s Almost at the Lake" pizza/burger joint, just outside of Pace Bend Park on Lake Travis, Texas. Was riding his bike home one night and a deer ran out in front of him just as he was leaning through a tight turn. – James Kallina, this past Friday. My offshore fishing buddy, member of the Texas Deaf Bass fishing club, etc. Great guy, his bike slipped on a little unexpected puddle of water in rush hour traffic. He went under a car and died instantly. Damn motorcycles are fun, but just too dangerous for a family man. Ron M.
