Are these any good?   I was thinking about getting myself one for Xmas;  I’ve shot the T/C Hawken and it’s just beautiful, but I’ve never even seen Cabela’s version. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I’ve own a Cabela’s Sportorized Hawkens for about 7 years now.  I think it a fine gun.  I use to own a CVA and didn’t like the quality at all.  Got rid of it and bought the Cabela’s.  Very similar to the T/C and at around $200.00, quite a bargain.  I purchased the 54 cal and shoot the T/C sabots through it.  Very accurate and reliable. I don’t think you’ll be sorry. If memory serves me right, the lynx went for about $139.99-$149.99.  I believe it also had an injection molded plastic stock.  That particular gun stands out because the gun shop I was working in at the time had ordered thirty of them and just about every one had to be sent back to CVA because the hammers didn’t strike the nipple.  They all missed it by about 3/16ths of an inch.  Kind of a basic thing for quality control to miss, don’t you think?  That was the same year CVA had the barrel recall.  If you already have the gun, you may want to call CVA with the serial number, just to make sure it doesn’t have one of the bad barrels. Here’s the #, 1 800 251-9412.  Used value:  70-80 dollars.  Hope this helps. Archy E. Wiseman Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Don’t buy one, I bought one some time ago and I’ve never had so many problems with ignition in any other gun.  I have a Thompson New Englander and Remington 700 ML and are much happier with those guns. Just my two cents. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Earlier this year I finished a T/C Hawken .50 cal kit and wouldn’t give the gun up for anything!  One very nice feature is the rifling stops about 1 1/2 inches from the top of the barrel(QLA) to allow you to easily start patched round balls or bullets. I then resently purchased the Cabela’s Lighting Fire Side Lock which has nice features, as mentioned in the catalog, but when it arrived it was made by Traditions.  The stock was not shaped evenly, there was scaring through the blueing from clamps, as best I can tell. And the stock either had poor wood or poor finish, or both. I am currently contemplating selling it. Cabela’s should state who makes there "Brand name" guns.  I would assume the Cabela’s Hawken is very similar. >Are these any good?   I was thinking about getting >myself one for Xmas;  I’ve shot the T/C Hawken >and it’s just beautiful, but I’ve never even seen >Cabela’s version.

Say what?  When did T/C start this.  I’ve owned T/C rifles for years and the rifling in every T/C barrel I’ve ever seen goes right to the top of the crown. > Cabela’s should state who makes there "Brand name" guns.  I would > assume the Cabela’s Hawken is very similar.

I whole heartedly agree, Cabela’s should identify the manufacture of every muzzleloader they sell. But you would assume very wrong.  Traditions rifles are Spanish made and the Cabala’s Hawkens are made by the Italian manufacture Investarms and are better built.  Investarms is the same company who builds the Lyman Great Plains Rifle who many experienced shooters will tell you is a better built and more accurate rifle than any sidelock manufactured by T/C.  I consider T/C a slightly above average beginners gun.
