I think the early 7400’s had problems within the receiver which would start to cause problems after excessive use.  I would describe the problem as "chattering".  Inspect the inside of the receiver with the trigger assembly removed for marks that would indicate the bolt or bars chattering.  Just a thought…  The only other thing would be to remove the forearm and make sure the spring is in good working order.  We replaced one on my dad’s 7400 and it functioned MUCH better after the replacement. Good Luck, hope you can take care of the problem before Mr. Wapiti steps in front of you! ;-) >is next week, and I would like to have the problem remedied by then. So, any >input would be helpful. >     The oproblem is that I am (sometimes)unable to pull back the action. Unfortunately you are yet another unsatisfied Remington 742 owner.  If you must have a selfloader have a look at the Browning BAR.  In the mean time you may have to hunt with a cranky single shot, which is an honorable tradition.  The best thing you can do now is take it to a gunsmith and have him give it a look. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I have a 742 in .308 about 10 years ago the inside bolt slide broke causing the bolt not to go back straight which would cause the rifle not to eject the spent round. — Thanks Michael Oberle Minnesota   The state where absolutely nothing is allowed. I had the same riffle and the same problems.  Notice I said had.  I took it to gunsmiths and everything to no use and ended up selling it.  I have the same gun in the 308 model 742 and have never had a problem.  One thing I was advised on though is never use oil, use a graphite dry lube on the 742 around the operating mechanism the oil tends to gum things up.  Hope this helps lots of luck. —–Original Message—– >      I have a Remington 30.06 Model 742 smei-auto and I am having problems >      My rifle started jamming recently, and it is very irritating. To All,      I have a Remington 30.06 Model 742 smei-auto and I am having problems as of recently.      My rifle started jamming recently, and it is very irritating. Elk season is next week, and I would like to have the problem remedied by then. So, any input would be helpful.      The oproblem is that I am (sometimes)unable to pull back the action. I have cleaned and oiled it, but I still have the problem. I fired it three time over the weekend and did not have the problem then. It only happens when I try to pull it back,. After a bit of work, it will retract but it will get stuck once more. I looked for wear and scrapes or gouges and could not find anything.      Any thoughts? James R. Sounds like the screws that hold the scope mounts are too long and interfering with the bolt
