I have two Burris scopes one is a Fullfield similar to yours which is great. The other  is a Signature Series 4-16×44 with the posi-lock system. I’ve used Nikon, Tasco and Simmons and the Burris out performs all of these hands down (though the Tasco and Simmons aren’t really a good comparison). The signature series scope is unreal clear and really pulls in the light in low light situations. Either way you go you’ll probably be happy, but as you can tell I’m a little more inclined to go with a Burris! I am going to order a scope for my new deer rifle soon.  The rifle is a Reminton Model 7 in 7mm-08, and I want to keep the scope in the intermediate-magnification range, like say a 2×8 or so.  Since I have time to save and so on, I’m going to spring for the best scope I’ve owned, and go with one of the above.  I already own a Burris Fullfield II 3×9, and it is a very nice scope by my standards, and will stay on my 30-06.  I thought it was a better scope for the same money than a Vari-X II. However, for $400+, I’m having a hard time coming up with a reason to buy a Signature Burris over a Vari-X III.  I’m leaning towards the Vari-X III in 2.5 X 8.  Anyone care to weigh in on this? -jeff Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I think you’d be happy with either one. — + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Chris Barnes                              AOL IM:  CNBarnes Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

You may want to look at the Weaver Grand Slam also.  They have gotten a lot of very good press.  I have heard several times that the Leupold are over priced.  I have heard the Burris is a well built scope with a good price. I would go to a larger sporting goods store and try to compare them back to back.  At highest magnification, I would look into a dark corner somewhere (maybe try to read the text on a box on a poorly lit shelf) and in a bright area and see which one allows me to read the smallest text. Don’t forget that at higher magnification on non-AO scopes you will have to look at objects at some distance (probably over 30 yards). In my oppinion the Luepold is going to be the best scope for you. I have had both of the scopes you are looking at and the Burris  just didn’t make the cut   I had it mounted on my Browning A Bolt Varmit grade in 308 cal.  I had my gun smith lap the rings [or true the rings witch ever you proffer]  and after about 100 shots the scope started to wander a bit.   I sent the scope back to Burris to get it fixed and it took about 3 months to get it back  although the problem was corrected  the time spent with out a scope on my rifle was totally unacceptable.    I also did not think the light gathering   on the scope was to good either. My grandfather left me a Remminton rifle with  a 4 power Luepold scope on it   that is over 30 years old and i think the light gathering on it is better than the new Burris.   And after only who knows  how many shots the old Luepold is still working just fine.  I have long since replaced the Burris for a 4×14  varrix 3  Luepold  and after many many shots it is still on   I have even drooped the rifle once ad it landed on the scope  I picked it up placed  the cross hairs on the  bullseye and it was still on.    I can even get almost another hour of hunting at dusk  for the luepolds light gathering  ability.     I have replaced all the scopes on my rifles with Luepolds  and I have never had1 problem with  them.   Even sent a scope off to Luepold to get the cross hairs changed  from  target dot to duplex and it only took them a week to return my scope to me.   Cant beat that. From what I’ve seen of Burris’ they are very large and heavy. Putting one on your Rem mdl 7 would negate its advantage of being a compact lightweight gun. I recently bought 2 Weaver Grand Slam scopes, and while they’re very good optically they don’t have the generous eye relief Leupolds have. I never used to really tout Leupolds, but after owning the gamut from Simmons, to Tascos, Bushnells, Weavers, the Leupold is by far king of the hill boarhuntr Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I have a Remington Model 7, 7mm 08 and I have the Leupold scope on it. Personal opinion would say the Leupold over anything!  Crystal clear, sturdy – tough construction, wide view, wont fog, etc. etc. etc. And the best with it is you can use the scope on a deer 20 yards away or well over 100!  (and the model 7 708 is one heck of a deer rifle!) Jeff, I have a few M7s.  One came with a Leupold 3×9 compact and I have put Burris 3×9 compacts on the others.  For the money, I just couldn’t see going for the Leupold.  The Leupold is brighter, but not by much.  I think SWFA has Burris 3×9 compacts for $220.00. In general, I go with smaller scopes and big binoculars.  The Burris Signature is a quality scope. If you really want one, put it on your 30-06. Good luck. I have my Model 7 set up with the Leupold Vari-X III 2.5×8 and really like it. The scope works very well in moderate woods and is very bright and clear, especially early in the morning and late in the afternoon.  It has held up well in rain and heavy morning dew.  It is not a large scope so it fits the Model 7 and doesn’t add a lot of weight.  I would not change the set up.
