The Browning is an excellent rifle; there is no better semi-auto in it’s class. It is also heavy carrying through the woods. No, the gas operation "energy loss" is minimal, if at all. Obviously, the heavy gas gun is a softer shooter than a light bolt. A "plinker" the 7mm mag is not. Hard to compare a bolt to a semi-auto. But the 700 is a fine gun, as is the Model 70, and the Ruger. The only one I haven’t owned is the Marlin, but that seems to be a quality piece as well. Hi,   My father has a 30-06 BAR since ‘67 perhaps.  For an obscure reason, he got a Browning A-Bolt 300 Win. Mag. for 4 or 5 years – luckily, I use his BAR during this time.   He sold the A-Bold and took back the BAR (snif). This is his all-around rifle.  He used to live on Anticosti Island (Whitetails), along the Saguenay River (Mooses) and now he lives in Labrador (Mooses and Caribous).   This is a very reliable rifle, on of the best Browning (Belgium) ever done.  But, a family friend got a .308 with lots of troubles.  Perhaps the short "breech" caused a problem?  For sure, the 7mm Rem.Mag. will not have it.
