And some States prohibit cap and ball revolvers for big game hunting altogether, regardless of the season. Be sure to have fun anyway. Good hunting! Michael Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

you don’t mention the caliber. for my Ruger Old Army, which is either a .44 or .45 depending on when it was bought, i guess, i use 25g of fffg powder and always use a wonder-wad between the powder and ball, and a #11 cap. If my second sentence sounded confusing, i will clarify. the Ruger Old Army does, and always has, used a .457 ball. but for years it was always marketed as a .44, whereas in the last few years it has begun to be called a .45. Follow the advice others have given as far as having someone check out the size. There may be a black powder inthusiast at the local hunt club that can give you a hand. I shoot a Confedrate Navy Revolver 44 cal. I load 35 grains pyrodex with a standard percussion cap. I use a bore lub (when it is warm outside) or crisco when it is cold to cover the ends of the loaded chambers. This is done to prevent the sparks from a fired chamber from hooping vover to the next chamber and igniting it. This phenom is calle chain firing and as you can imagine it is very bad. Hi! Keep in mind that if you decide to go hunting with a blackpowder revolver, some states only allow this in the regular firearms season because it does not qualify as a "muzzleloader." I’ve always wanted one of these to just see what it may have been like in the Civil War to load and shoot such a pistol. Always, Gene. Assuming you have one of the models with the loading lever mounted ahead of the cylinder and under the barrel. You will want to know that the lead round ball will need to be .001 greater than the caliber. The seating rod will shave off the .001+/- as the ball is seated. Leaving a thin strip of lead. This allows for an airtight gas seal. Another very important tip is to seal each chamber by putting bore butter of some type, or crisco as someone has already mentioned, on top of the lead ball, as the last step. The purpose of this is to prevent leakage of burning gases from entering one of the remaining unfired chambers and causing a premature discharge. These revolvers are a blast to target shoot and just play around with. If you have one of the quality models with accuracy good enough to hunt with such as the Ruger Old Army, you can have a very satisfying hunt. What kind of Revolver? You forgot to mention it! You probably could use HODGON Pyrodex "P". Your load depends on many factors, ….the caliber, for example… BJ > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: > http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Surprised no info came with gun. My only experience is 1860 Army from Cabelas which kit came with balls (454) and #10 caps. I use 19 gr pyrodex (light load) and cover ball with Crisco. Best take it to a gun shop to size for caps and balls. Frank Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
