Biggest Black Bear Ever?

Question:

>     You don’t weigh ‘em like a trout.  The trophy is judged by the size >of the skull.  Sometimes by the "squared" hide.  The only people I know of who weigh whole bears >would be wildlife biologists and zoos.  If you find out about a >bona-fide big fat whoppin’ black bear, let us know!  My guess is 405 >pounds.

You might want to consider that those asking questions here have reasons beyond your apparently simple understanding for asking them. I am well aware of how Boone and Crockett measures skulls, but that isn’t the question. The question was about body weight and your answer was so far off that it’s hard to imagine your being smug. Thanks to everyone else. The largest recorded was 805 to the best of my knowledge but I have been investigating a more recent claim of just over 900. You are way low.  A couple of weeks ago the Glenwood Springs, CO had an article about one killed on I-70 that weighed in at 570#, and it was missing some parts that passers by harvested. Taken from a Pa. Game Commision news release #63-00: Bears are heavy and have short, powerful legs. Adults usually weigh from 200 to 600 pounds, with rare individuals weighing up to 900 pounds. I tried to post earlier and it disappeared.  So I’ll try again. I don’t know the weight of the world record black bear as that is not how the record is established.  But, I do know that 2 black bears over 650 lbs have been taken in Wisconsin this season.  One of them, if I remember correctly was something like 730 lbs, and was shot over a pile of "Gummy Bears". :) — Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

There is a biological law, named after somebody I can’t remember (if   you know the name, please e-mail me), that states that the largest   examples of a species will be found the farthest from the equator   (something to do with heat conservation), so I would expect that the   record black bear would be found in Alaska…  But, a local taxidermist   here in NM once purchased a black bear that had died in a zoo that   weighed over 800 lbs. – fat old bear!   -Bob |      N.R.A. The largest (by weight) black bear taken by hunting in North America was a whopping 830 pounds, taken by a hunter, I believe, in Wisconsin, back in the 1800s.  I just read about this the other day but I may be out plus or minus 10 pounds.  In any event, that would not be a critter that you would want to run into in the thick bush without a big gun, or be safely up a tree stand with your bow. If anybody knows if the hide or skull from this monster has survived the passage of time, and where it could be seen, please advise. We live in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains (Calgary) and have been out every weekend hunting elk and bear  since mid-September.  We’ve seen lots of game this year, especially moose, a few elk (but less than previous years) and lots of bears.  We usually see about 75% grizzlies and 25% black bears in the area we hunt in (WMUs 402 and 404) but this year the percentages have been reversed.  The scarcity of elk can likely be attributed to the extremely warm fall which we’ve been having, but it’ll likely improve in November when it gets colder and hopefully snows  more.  Haven’t taken a shot yet but soon… Hope that everyone is having a good season, just getting out into the mountains, and seeing lots of game, has made it a great year so far..
