Best Action?
Question:
What are opinions of best action and best hunting rifle – just curious – to stir up discussion! I say Remington model 700 (bolt action) has to be the best action. As far as a gun, I love Remington’s model 7, 7mm 08 (good for whitetail) but I would have to go with Remington, model 700, 270 (my gun of course!) – it’s a remington model 700, and short of grizzly you can hunt pretty much anything with it. It has a high load, (which allows that) but you can load down to what ever you want/need (and it is a lot easier to load down then up) blade_fascination Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

That depends on what I’m hunting and under what conditions. Some days a Winchester 94 is right. Some days the Remington model seven. Some days my TC "big boar" .58 gets the nod. There’s days I feel the need for a single shot, either a rolling block Remington or a Winchester high wall. Once in a while, a heavy barrelled bolt action is just the ticket; I lean toward custom "varmint" setups based on the Remington 700 action and HS Precision stocks. I have one in .17 Remington which is just being finished and the components assembled for a Sendero-like .300 … either Win Mag or Rem Ultramag, yet to be determined. For my favorite shin-tangle blacktail hunting, my favorite all time "hunting rifle" action is not a rifle at all, it’s a Ruger single action, blackhawk or Super Blackhawk in .41 mag, .44 mag, or .45 colt.; if it’s a blackhawk it gets a Super Blackhawk hammer installed so my small hands can reach the lower spur quicker. I’ll bite. My favorite dear hunting rifle is my model 7 .243 AI. My favorite bear hunting rifle is my Model 700 .30-06. I am wanting to build a .338 WSM AI for elk and moose. I will probably get clarke to build it for me…right now I am just dreaming. Savage 12 bvsss .233 is best for inexpensive tack driving small varmints. I have a 9422 that is my all time favorite hunting rifle. Lastly, I am beginning to love my newly acquired 882 .22 mag. I bought this to have a throw around on my 3 wheeler. I usually don’t take a nice rifle into the refuge when the back water is up. This is a good way to ruin a good gun. The pre 64 needs to be mentioned and the older ruger bolt. The newer of these two are a waste of metal. Scott Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

IMHO. . . Best Action: Bolt (thinks it is: lever) Best Rifle: Remington M7 Stainless Synthetic (thinks it is: Win M94) Best Caliber: .308 Win (thinks it is: .30-30) Best Scope: Leupold 2-7x Compact (thinks it is: generic Simmons/Weaver/etc 3-9x) By the sheerest coincidence, I have exactly this lil’ beauty, and it suits me fine. With it and 165 gr Fail Safes, I’ll take on anything at all, to 100 yds; and anything "non-dangerous" to 300 yds. Hank Jackson "So many China Shoppes, so little time."
