bear and 30-06
Question:
Several years ago I shot a small black bear only because of a beautiful coat (not because of the size). I was shooting a .338 Win Mag w/ 225 grain Hornady bullets. My buddy was watching through binoculars as I made the shot while the bear was broadside at 80 yards. He said it looked like someone through a bucket of red paint out the backside of the bear. The animal thrashed and clawed and bit the air for probably 45 seconds before dying. I was greatly impressed with the tenacity of the animal and was glad he didn’t have a mind to come our way before dying. He could have inflicted a lot of damage. While cleaning the bear I found the shot had taken the heart completely apart with not a piece bigger than a quarter left. Needless to say, I would be much more comfortable with something larger than a 30.06 for any bear. I hope this helps.

Black Bear… Plenty… Other bears? No experience… For those that are claiming .30-06 is not enough for black bear. HOGWASH! And I HAVE seen some big bears, dead. Killed them to about 300+lbs myself. Well now that depends. Are you talking Grizzly, Brown or Black? And at what range are you talking about? Putting aside those questions, with Black bear here in Oregon 30-06 works fine. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Is the bear falling with a 30-06? Could you be a bit more specific? In North America, we have quite a few species of bear…black bears treed by hounds are taken by hunters with .357 Magnum revolvers…but that wouldn’t be my choice for Kodiak bears. well……there are ‘bears’, and then there are ‘BEARS’…..if you are talking about a black bear, then yes, a 30-06 will knock it’s d**k in the dirt. don’t know about ‘BEARS’ though….don’t have any of the Big Meanies in my area, but i know some of the posters (or at least one) is from alaska, and will be able to advise about them, for sure…. In the days before the huge magnum calibers became popular, bear hunters cheerfully used the 30-06s with 220gr bullets for everything from black bears to Kodiak and Polar bears. Before that they used black powder rifles. Bill Van Houten (USA Ret) "No matter how hard you try, you can’t throw a potato chip very far." I spoke to a guide in Fairbanks, Alaska who said it is ok to use a 30-06 or 300WM for bear but shot placement becomes critical. With a 30-06 you better be sure to hit the basketball-sized vitals area. If you hit the bear on the front shoulder, bone can deflect the bullet and the bear keep coming at you, now very angry. If you hit the shoulder bone with something like a 338WM or a 375H&H the bone is likely to break and the bear is not likely to get you before you finish him off with a second shot to the vitals. Sounds like pretty good reasoning to me. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Yes, I used a 30-06 to bring down a 225lb Black Bear. The shot was taken from about 100yds. The bear ran approx 50ft before it finally came to rest. I used a 180 grain. Pictures looked great and so does the rug. Happy hunting. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ——Original Message—– Newsgroups: rec.hunting >Has anyone used a 30-06 to shoot bear? Is this a problem? My buddy shot a black bear behind the shoulder at 20 feet with a 180 gr FL in a 300 Win mag. The bear ran about 150 feet into a swamp and died- took four of us to get it out. If it had come at him he wouldn’d be here now. The guys had been kidding me about carrying a 458 mag ( loaded to hot 45/70 levels)- after looking at those claws & teeth, and how far it ran with a death wound, the next year they each had their own 458.
