BAR 30-06 Boss Question

Question:

I have a BAR 30-06 without BOSS and it kicks about the same as my .243. I also have a 7mm BAR with BOSS.  It kicks about half as much as my .243.  Kick is almost non existant with BAR and BOSS. > I am thinking of purchasing a Browning BAR 30-06 with the Boss.  I > currently use  .308  because of the light recoil properties associated > with that caliber.  Will the Browning BAR 30-06 w/Boss have less recoil > or equal to the .308.  Please email me if you have shot a Browing 30-06 > W/Boss about the recoil and comments on the gun and caliber.  Maybe a > .308 would be a better selection…

I have a Browning BAR with BOSS in 30-06 caliber.  It does seem to have a  little less recoil than other 30-06’s I have fired.  However, I do not think the difference is large enough to get worked up about.  The weight of the gun makes a much larger difference.  A light 30-06 with a hard buttplate will give me a sore shoulder in 20-30 rounds.  The BAR is heavy and has a buttpad so I do not even notice 20 or 30 rounds with it.  Also, I do not feel a large difference between the .308 and the 30-06.  Most .308’s I have fired are slightly lighter than 30-06’s so there is no real difference.  If you are recoil sensitive, why not try a .270 or something.  Don’t buy the BOSS for recoil reduction: buy it for the accuracy. I have a 7mm Mag BAR with BOSS, A 30-06 BAR without BOSS, a 30-30, and a heavy .243 with bull barrel.  I have a good friend with a 30-06 Browning A-bolt.  The A-bolt kicks about 1 1/2 times harder than the 30-06 BAR without a BOSS.  The 7mm Mag with BOSS kicks noticibly less than the .243. and probably only about 1/2 as much as the 30-06 BAR without the BOSS.  It is a significant reduction in kick.  This helpd with the accuracy because first you don’t learn to flinch or anticipate the shot. Second the barrel is not moving as much when it doesn’t kick so hard. If you want to see the difference the muzzel break on the BOSS makes, Pick up the BOSS without Muzzel break They go from between $15 and $20. Shoot 5 rounds from each, You should definately nitice the differenc. I am thinking of purchasing a Browning BAR 30-06 with the Boss.  I currently use  .308  because of the light recoil properties associated with that caliber.  Will the Browning BAR 30-06 w/Boss have less recoil or equal to the .308.  Please email me if you have shot a Browing 30-06 W/Boss about the recoil and comments on the gun and caliber.  Maybe a .308 would be a better selection… Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

Joel,           There really is no difference between the .308 and .30-06.. at least not appreciably anyway.  The BOSS, and other similar muzzle brakes will decrease recoil to some degree, but if you have ever had the opportunity to shoot a gun fitted with such an apperatus, then you will surely remember the extreme fealt muzzle blast from such a gun. IMHO, the blast is enough to induce flinch nearly as bad as that from heavy recoil, especially for someone not accustomed to it.         As far as the BOSS’s claimed acuracy increases, that remains a dubious claim at best.  The science behind it is sound, but the BOSS’s ability to put that into practice in real world terms seems to be a controversial topic.  Whether that is due to actual ability to tighten groups by the mechanics or because it is due to the shooters reaction to the heavy muzzle blast, I don’t know.         In either case, the recoil difference between the .308 and .30-06 is not much..probably not even noticeable (unless you shoot handloaded, hot .30-06 rounds).  The BAR, due to it’s mechanical design, will reduce recoil to some degree over bolt guns.  It is my opinion that the BOSS will not give you any advantage in either recoil or accuracy either way, at least not to the point of being worth the cost of the BOSS.  The BAR itself would be a fine rifle in either caliber.
