AUSTRALIAN GUN CONTROL

Question:

Just like to draw the attention to the "Gun Debate" that is going on in Australia at the moment.  For those that know following the Port arthur massacre where 35 people were gunned down in very tragic circumstances, there has been enormous backlash from the Media and Government departments.  The proposal (so far is): #1 The total banning of **ALL** semi-automatic weapons, be it a pistol rifle etc, both centerfire and rimfire.   And by ban they don’t mean "you can’t buy them anymore" . This ban will include Semi-automatic shot-guns of all styles and designations. It means that you **MUST** surrender all weapons that fit this description.  As all firearms are registered, they know who has what in most cases.  Forced confiscation has **NOT** been ruled out. A proposal has been "drawn up" to implement a TAX or levy of $30.00 AUD each year to "re-pay" or compensate the shooters.  People have generally been disinterested/negative in paying to compensate the shooters. I realise that this should be in rec.politics.guns,  but here in Aus. this move will affect the whole course of Hunting as we know it and may even be it’s demise.  Pretty sad when a nation of shooters has to pay for the actions of one *moron*. Response:

Mark describes a bad scene but the news reports this morning on aol are even grimer. It is sad indeed to see a free country begin the slide into tyranny. When this kind of thing appears in the world, it doesn’t take our antis long to call for the same thing here. At the last, we are going to have to face the prospect of just telling them "no"…R/jim
