The other day while looking for something else I ran across the American Rifleman writeup a few years ago–Mark Keefe (now editor of the magazine) and some other writers went on a wild hog hunt in north Texas to try them and apparently all were happy with the results. If it’ll stay together on a hog it ought to stay together on a deer. O.K., I don’t have the caliber that you do. Mine’s in .25-06. I also use Nosler Ballistic Tip, not Hornady SST. Hornady doesn’t make it in a .257 cal. BUT, it is essentially the same bullet and concept. I use them on Mule deer in Az., which is a derivitive of a blacktail with BIG friggin’ ears! Short story: If you hit one with a well-placed shot, it will go down like it went to sleep. The hydrostatic shock of the shell inside of the chest cavity will essentially turn the internal organs into soup. You will have to "pour" out the insides of the deer. If you are worried about shell fragmentation, don’t be. It’ll penetrate, but won’t come out the other side. A highly effective killer. I knew a guy who used one on our elk up North on the Mogollon Rim. One shot, no tracking, and a lot of good meat. One other item: Be careful about storing the Federal Premium ammo. I have a batch that is corroding for no apparent reason. I’m going to start using Remington brass to reload (not the Federal once-shots) because of it. See my earlier post. I haven’t heard anything from Federal yet. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I have a Reminton Model 7 in 7mm-08 that has been a real problem rifle. >I finally have it dialed in to the point that I can try some premium ammo >in it and see what it likes. I have a Reminton Model 7 in 7mm-08 that has been a real problem rifle. I finally have it dialed in to the point that I can try some premium ammo in it and see what it likes. What it shoots reasonably well so far is Federal Classic 150-grn at 2600 fps or so (around 1.3 MOA) and Hornady light Magnum with the 139-grn SST Interlock bullet at 3000 fps (1.5 MOA). What I’d really like to shoot in it, which is 140’s at 2850 fps or so, all seem to group around 2 MOA or slightly worse, including Federal Premium with Partitions, which would be my first choice. Anyway, I’m tempted to just sight in with the Light Mag’s and go for it. The SST bullet scares me some though. That ballistic tip just looks like it wants to POP. Hornady says that the SST expands quickly but then stays together well for good penetration.. anyone killed a deer with one? This will be for blacktail deer. Ranges would most likely be short but could go out to 200 yards or as far as I trust myself and the rifle. On longer shots, that Light Mag looks great as it starts fast and retains velocity well with that ballistic tip. The easy expansion would be a good thing at longer ranges too. I just worry it’d be a little bomb at 40 yards! -jeff Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
