Ken, Brown Precision has a list of most common actions and what they weigh in their catlaog. Their tel. number is 800-543-2506. They favor the Remington actions when it comes to light weight as does Rifles, Inc. another lightweight rifle maker. Jim
Response:
For those contemplating building ultra-lightweight hunting rifles, the weight of the action is a critical factor which governs how light that rifle can be. Recently I searched my available literature to determine the weights of available actions and was impressed by what I could not find, and by the lack of such information available from manufacturers. For the actions of interest, here is what I found, which may or may not be correct. All actions are short .308 length actions. Win Mod 70 According to DeHaas, the long action featherweight is 45oz. There is listing for the short action. I called US Repeating Arms and they claimed that the short action featherweight was 45oz. I don’t believe this. I would gress that the short M-70 is about 42-43 oz. Rem M-7 Could find no listing on this one, other than the fact that it is 4oz lighter than a Short Rem 700, or about 36oz. Rem 700 40oz is what is listed for the 722. Short 700 should be about the same???? Ruger 77 40oz for the old 77. The new mark II is ???? Sako 40oz, listed by manufacturer. If anyone has any better info on these actions, I would appreciate some feedback. Thanks. regards, Ken Karcich
