7mm Rem Mag.

Question:

What bullet weight should be used for moose in a 7mm rem mag? I picked up 175 core locks when I bought the rifle.Should I  sight in and go with these or what suggestions does anyone have??                          Thanks                                 Paul.     The 175 grain psp core-lokt are ok. But you would be much better off using Federal Premium 160 grain nosler partion. More expensive but better for moose at different ranges. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I load 175gr Speer Mag-Tips for my sons 7mm Rem Mag and they have been flawless in everything from small deer to  very large elk Early on in reloading I used the 162 boat tail, which was the most accurate bullet we ever tried, but after he shot a mulie at 35 yards and the bullet exploded we never fired another one. I don’t think that bullet is designed to impact at the speed it was moving at that range The use of the Speers is not a budget thing, I use Noslers in most everything I load, but  because it is  accurate enough and the terminal performance has been impressive Re: the exploded bullet, it did kill the deer, so I guess it wasn’t a total failure. My best guess is the jacket separated after a rib impact, went under the right front leg and cut a large wound in the  neck Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Hi Paul, .175 is the largest grain you can shoot out of a 7mm mag.  I use 160 grain noseler partitions (I’ve tried 175s and 162 in boat-tail) and it is the BEST all round bullet for the 7mm mag imo.  If you need to shoot larger you should consider going to a .300 win mag or something but I use my 7mm on moose, goat, sheep and all deer.  I shot a moose last fall with the 162 boat-tails and it took a half step and collapsed.  I hit it through the heart so 175 grain bullets are nowhere near as important as where you hit it.  Hope this helps Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
