just what the Rem. Model 7 was designed for. What scope are you planing to use? I don’t *think* you’d notice any significant difference between the .260 and the 7mm-08. I’d suggest getting the 7mm-08 because ammo and reloading components are probably more readily available for it than the .260. But if you want to have something a little different than the run of the mill, get the .260! Devin,  You say sou do you own handloading so I have some interesting thoughts for you. Before I start let me say that the 7mm-08 is a great round on deer size game and smaller. In fact my next purchace is going to be a T/C Encore in 7mm-08.  However, you are looking for a short action lightweight  versitile gun that will go anywhere and do most any thing within reson. That is why I woulk choose a .308. Check out your loading manuals for reduced loads using  Dupont SR4759 powder. Speer has several  loads for the .308 using that powder. If you don’t want to beet the bejeebers out of your shoulder with a day of varmit hunting. This powder works wonders. Also a load using this powder and bullets designed for the 30-30 Winchester makes a great combo for a new shooter if you ever want to pass you gun along. The benifit here is you use the SAME gun for everything, and, at least in theory, you get very proficient with it because you are so used to shooting with it. Youngsters have the benifit of starting with a gun that doesn’t kick to much, but gives them a much better load than the .243 or other such "beginer" rounds.  I have a Weatherby VGL that is very light, and an absolute joy to shoot. It is in .308. You couln’t get it from me for $5,000. Well, I WILL take $5,000 for it if anyone wants it!!!!!!!  This is food for thought. Remember what they say about opinions. I can’t say it in this forum,  or I will get kicked out, but take what I say for what it’s worth. Hope I have been of some help. I think the heading says it all. I’m looking to buy a Remington Mod.7 in stainless with the 20 inch barrel, and thought I’d decided to go with the New (not such a new) .260 round, because its so close to the 7mm-08 ballisticly then I started reading magazine articles and the doughts just welled up.   I’ve been hunting with my .300 savage for years and have no complaints I just would like something new that shoots flatter and can be loaded down for varmints (I do my own loading, always) but also be able to dispatch an elk at 150 yards. My normal hunt with this rifle would be CLOSE cover whitetail and bear in northeastern Washington.  I  also own a 7mm Rem. Mag and a .338 and a .270 that I use for mule deer and elk in semi-open country. The main reason that I’m even considering the model 7 is that I’v been having trouble getting into the prime areas that are so brushy and feel I could operate better with a short Bolt action thats LIGHT. The areas I hunt that are brushy, don’t stay brushy. You have to climb on your hands and knees then the brush clears and you could easily have a 200 yard shoot in the same area. You can see the need for diversity. The same area has Elk (N.E.Wa.) under the same brushy conditions. I don’t hunt elk there every year but my family has property up there and some years I can’t hunt my ususal area.   So my question is are there any real solid differences between the 7mm-08 and the .260 and does the .308 have very good varmint character- istics, I’m really shying away from .308 because of the heavier bullets.               Thanks for you help, Devin Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING
