.44 mag handgun hunting at 100ds????

A lot depends on the model of 44 magnum, sights, and the skill of the hunter involved. A scoped Encore or Contender with 12-15" barrel will have no problem taking a whitetail at 100 yards. The Hornady 240 grain JHP/XTP is an excellent choice. In a revolver, your velocities drop a bit, as does your accuracy. In the hands of most, an unscoped 44 mag revolver is a 50-75 yard proposition. When I got tired of dragging deer and rifle through alder and devil’s club on Kodiak I switched to my Ruger .44 after stopping to think about the average distance of shots I was getting (or could often get). I used 240g JHP if I remember and never went back to the rifle. With open sights and using a rest, any kind of a rest whenever possible, my effective range (read: hitting poa, humane kills) went only out to about 80 yards. The limitations were mine, not the gun’s. If you wish to reach farther, a scope is probably indicated. Let your practice targets be your guide.
