.338 Win + Swift A-Frame Help

Question:

I am about to work up some loads for my .338 Win using the Swift 250 gr bullet.  Have not loaded Swift before.  While I have most of the manuals, I have no data for Swift.  As the make of bullet can alter velocity and pressure substantially, it would be helpful to know what experience others have had.  I can use Win. or Rem brass.  So far (with other bullets) I have experienced the most consistency with H-4831, and have a good supply.  Would be happy to offer my own experience and data in return after I’m through. In my Ruger M77Mk-2 338WIN, I loaded 71gn AR2209 (Made by A.D.I) which gave a velocity of slightly over 2700 f.p.s in the Ruger’s 24" barrel.  From what I have heard ADI make’s most of Hodgons powders and AR2209 is suppose to *be* H-4350.  This load was not maximum in my rifle and cases seemed to last for quite a while (6 re-loads). All cases were Winchester and Primers were Federal 215’s. Try H-4350 at around 67gn and try and work up to 71gn.  If these powders really are the same, then I think you will be more than happy with the results. IMR-4350 works really well with the 338WIN/250gn bullets as well.  I cannot remember the loads exactly but they were around 70gn. The same powder propelled 200gn Nosler BT’s out at 3150 f.p.s with a (MAXIMUM) load of 78gn 185gn Barnes XBT loaded with 79gn of the same powder produced 3250 f.p.s (MAX LOAD). Hello Mark.  I have done load develop for the .338 Win Mag in my 24 inch Winchester Model 70.  The load that I settled on was 68 gr. of IMR4350 using the 250 gr. Swift A-Frame and the 250 gr. Barnes SuperSolid.  The velocity of the Swift was 2667 fps (instrumental, 12 feet from muzzle, 70 degrees F) and the Barnes was 2678 fps (same conditions).  The Swift averaged < 1 inch five shot groups at 100 meters.  The Barnes’s weren’t quite as good with that load at about 2 inch averages, but the group center was coincident with the Swift’s (at 100 meters). I used Federal 215 primers and Winchester Western brass. There’s nothing magic about the loads; 68 gr. of IMR4350 was suggested by Jim Carmichel years ago, and I concur.  There is hotter data available, but I wanted to keep my pressures down in the African heat. I used these loads during a Zimbabwe safari in 1995.  13 one shot kills with the Swift.  I never needed the Barnes. I hope this helps … Good hunting, Jim Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING
