300 WSM (300 Jamison)

Question:

A few years ago there was an article that was much abused in this news group about a short fat cartridge in .308.  Most people here were saying how useless it was to exceed 30-06 performance, but not exceed 300 Winchester Mag.  I think I might have been one of a few that tought it was a good idea in a short action light rifle. This months Handloader features the 300 Winchester Short Mangum with factory ammo available and Winchester and Browning to offer factory rifles in this caliber. Sure Lazzaroni and a few others have short fat offerings, but not in affordable firearms. The article says it is based on the .348 Winchester with the rim removed.  A little fatter than .404 Jeffery and slimmer than the .416 Rigby.  It matched the performance of the .300 Win Mag.  I have no idea on availability but I’m looking forward to it. There was a company that manufactured several different caliber rifles based on the ..348  They were called "heavyexpress", but I can’t find their website anymore. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I just read the article this evening (as I was out hunting this weekend, and didn’t get the mail until today). I found it to be a possibly interesting cartridge, although it sounds like vapor ware right now, as cartridge dimensions aren’t even published yet.  Nevertheless, a short action cartridge would be nice if you had the right action for it, but unless you have suddenly decided you want a .300 WM now and don’t own one yet, I don’t see the point in switching. — Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
