300 win mag scope
Question:
just purchased the 300 would like some opinions on what power scope to mount on it. I was thinking of a 4×12 Leupold. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Depends on which rifle and how you’re gonna use it. Anything from 3-9X to a 4.5-14X will work on a hunting rifle; at times even a 6.5-20X is right. If it’s a heavy rifle that doesn’t swing quick, like a Win 70 Laredo or Remingon 700 Sendero, the big scope makes sense ’cause the smaller field of view doesn’t really slow you up in ways the rifle’s weight hasn’t already done. If it’s a sporter that you might reasonably use in close cover, a 3-9X or 3.5-10X is hard to beat. Ya might also consider the Leupold 2.5-8X … I think it is the single best all around scope on the market for everything from a big game rifle to a walking varmint rifle. How about a 1.75-6x Vari-X III. Nothing you’re likely to shoot with a .300 magnum is going to disappear at 6x. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Take a look at the Schmidt & Bender 3-12×50 . I just put one on my new Heym 300 win mag and it’s incredible . Puts the Leopold to shame . If you want a Leopold 3-9×50 I’ll be glad to sell you one . Bought it last year for my 30-06 . $225 and it’s yours . Regards , Ralph Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

If you are going to hunt big game, a 4X12 scope is too powerful. You’ll want a low power of no more than 2.5X on a variable, because you need a broad field of view when hunting in close cover. I’d suggest the Leupold Vari-X III in 2.5X8. I have one on a .270 and its excellent. My second choice would be a Burris Signature scope. On the other hand, if you’re going to use the rifle for target shooting or metallic silhouettes, you may want a scope that has a top power of 18X or so. Enjoy your new gun. I’ll go with Michael’s suggestion. He’s right about not needing the high end magnification, but 1.75X setting is the biggest advantage. Those large critters aren’t always stone dead when you get up to them. Some are thrashing around a little, or laying on their bellies waiting for you to get just a little closer. That’s when a low power scope can save some meat…or your hide. A few years back my hunting partner was looking for some glass to put on his customized .300. He ran into a good deal on a couple of expensive, new rifle scopes, and, much to the salesman’s surprise, chose the 2-7X over the 3-9X, even though they were the same price. I guess it’s the sort of thing you don’t appreciate until you’ve had a grizzly run in your direction ;o) (Yes, I’m sure he would have taken the 1.75-6X had it been available at that time) K. I Started out with the vari-xiii 3.5×10 but switched to the 4.5×14 when it came out. It’s nice to see what you’re shooting at,6.5X20 could be nice also! I think the more power the better! Also Weaver is a good product..give them a look, reasonably priced! Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

If you are going to be hunting in the wide open spaces that makes sense. I would ask what type of terrain you will be hunting most because a scope adds weight to a rifle and in the end if you are on 3 to 6 power because of the terrain then you probably have to much scope. I hunt Elk in Colorado and you are mostly in dark timber and a fixed 4 or 6 power is ideal. I use a 3X9 Leupold vari X ll because you never know when you might see an elk on the next ridge 200-300 yards away. I have it generally set on 4 to 6 power. Two of my hunting buddies use Redfield wideview fixed 6 power scopes and swear by them.
