.300 Savage question …
Question:
Hi Glen, About all I know about the .300 Savage is that it has been around a long time, and it is a very effective deer cartridge. It is a short range cartridge, a bit more powerful than the .30-30, but not as powerful as the .308. I have two friends who hunt coastal blacktail deer with it and one who hunts northeast Washington whitetail with it, and they are fairly successful with bringing home the venison. Best wishes. The .300 Savage is a fairly good caliber. It is a little less powerful than the .308 Winchester. It is very good for deer and will even take elk if the range is under 200 yards. #Just wanted to ask the group what they think of the .300 savage as a #caliber? # #Also … does anyone have any history on the caliber? Glenn ; I have several rifles in .300 Savage and find it to be an excellent cartridge for all around hunting. I have used it quite often with 165 and 180 grain bullets. It was introduced in 1920 in the Savage 1899 Lever Action and Savage 1920 Bolt Action both of which I own and are extremely well made. The performance is about the same as the .308 and it is very accurate (at least in the guns I own). The cartridge was designed to give 30-06 ballistics in a short cartridge. This it accomplished very well. However since the 30-06 has been beefed up with modern powders it’s larger capacity allows for more powerful loadings. Glenn, The .300Sav is a fine short range (200 yard) cartridge. I use compressed loads of H380 powder to acheive ~2650fps with 150gr Nosler Ballitsic Tips with fairly docile pressures. I shoot a Rem722 w/ 24" barrel and it does the job on Blacktail. The .300Sav is about 100-150fps behind the .308Win with same weight bullets. I do feel the .308Win case is a little stronger, giving a little longer case life. I like the .308Win’s longer neck from a reloading standpoint as it allows bullets to be seat a little farther out while still maintaining adaquate bearing surfaces. And the .308Win has a very good accuracy record. This however does NOT make the .300Sav a bad cartridge, but it does take a back seat to the .308Win. If it were not for the fact that my Rem722 once belonged to my Granddad, I would probibly have the chamber reamed out to .308Win. But as it is,…. it still seems to put meat on the table. the 300 Sav was first chambered in the M-99 Sav in 1920, to give similar ballistics to the 30-06 in a lever action. Similar, not equal. My uncle used one for years on deer and elk and never had a complaint. In its day, it was state of the art. Just wanted to ask the group what they think of the .300 savage as a caliber? #Just wanted to ask the group what they think of the .300 savage as a #caliber? # #Also … does anyone have any history on the caliber? Glenn, .300 Savage is not a caliber, it is a cartridge. .300 is a caliber. the .300 Savage is an excellent deer/black bear sort of cartridge. It has ballistics on par with the excellent .30-40 Krag or .303 British, and not so far off a .308 factory load that a deer would know the difference. As with all issues of this sort, the inherent accuracy of the rifle and the competence of the shooter are more important than the round used.
