The .308 Norma is basically a .358 Norma Mag necked down to .308. It sits between the .300H&H and .300 Win Mag in performance. Jim Rogers AKA Coyote Hunter Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

You forgot the new .300 Short Remington Ultra Mag (SRUM), which is about the same dimensions as the .300 WSM (a little shorter and fatter, IIRC). From what I’ve seen, the .300 WSM and SRUM are virtually identical in capability. I’d give the .300 Win Mag a slight edge and the .300 RUM a bigger edge, so the list should be: > .308Win > 30-06 Springfield > 300 Winchester Short Magnum / Short Remington Ultra Magnum > 300 Winchester Magnum > 300 Remington Ultra Magnum
My question is, which of the new calibers (WSM, SRUM, RUM) will be arouond 10 years from now? My guess is the RUM will be here and its a toss-up between the WSM and the SRUM. The WSM has a head start in availability, but I think Rem sells more guns? Maybe it will simply come down to what other rifle manufacturer’s choose to chamber their guns for? As for me, I’m wanting another centerfire rifle for Christmas. None of the new WSM’s, SRUM’s or RUM’s are are the list of potential calibers, which ranges from .243 to .338WM in bolt guns and .30-30 to .450M in lever guns. As to the new .300 calibers, I’ll wait to see if there are any winners in this race before getting one. (Instead, I’m leaning toward the opposite end of the spectum – a .30-30 Marlin.) Actually the .308 Norma Mag cartridge was the .300 mag that the .300 Win Mag should have been. In fact, I believe it pre-empted Winchester from using that very design, to wit: a straightforward neck-down of the .338 Win mag to 30 caliber. Norma, the company, is/was a scandinavian powder/ammo company, still active so far as I know. One advantage of the .308 Norma Mag over the ..300 win mag is a longer neck to grip the bullet. .300 Win Mag is notoriously short-necked from a reloader’s point of view. However, you need not look far to see which .300 Mag prevailed in the (U.S.) marketplace. Hardly the first time that marketing muscle beat substance. In theory the progression is something like .308, .30′06, .300 WSM, .300 Win Mag, .300 Wby, .300 RUM, then the .30/.378 Wby, but as a practical matter (if 25 years sharing the benches at the 100 yard line are any indication) in hands of the average shot the larger the powder charge the larger the groups, especially if the rifle is light or the muzzle brake large. I respectfully submit that many shooter’s maximum effective range may actually decrease as the power increases. $0.04 Good hunting!
