.30-338 Win Mag
Question:
I have a 30-338 and I love it. It worked great in Africa and on all NA game I have shot at. The rifle is a custom, so it is very accurate and I get almost 300 wby velocities from it. You can’t buy ammo for it though, you need to resize either 300 H&H or 338 Win and reload it yourself. RCBS makes dies for either case. If you don’t mind reloading, then it’ can be a good option, but it isn’t any better than the .300 Win or .300 Wby, from what I experienced. -Brenen >Does anyone have any info on where I can buy .30-338 shells. if you reload you can use a 7mm REM Mag. case. it is the same as a .338 win mag.. …you run it through your 30-338 die and you are all set…..that way you neck up the brass…its a good idea to start reading Handloading Magazine….they print 30-338 info. I had one made up a few years ago and am extremly happy with, however I think I just re-invented the 308 norma. It was converted from a Mauser 30/06 that had a chamber deminsion problem and I had a lot of 338 brass around. Its a good Elk and Deer rifle with great long range capabilities. In my experience when you neck-up brass the mouth of the case will not be square and must be trimmed. This will result in a slightly shortened case. Necking down .338 Win does not increase the neck thickness enough to be a problem and this was probably taken into consideration when the round was designed. I don’t recomment using "used" brass, so if you’re going to buy new brass, you might as well buy .338 Win. You’d should check things out before you respond. The .338 IS NOT a shortened version of the .300 Win. Mag. In 1956, Winchester introduced the first in a family of cartridges that were destined to become some of the most successful ever. The first was the .458 Win. Mag. The .338 Win. Mag. came next in 1958. Then came the .264 Win. Mag. in 1959 and the last of the four was the .300 Win. Mag. in 1963. Remington introduced the 7MM Rem. Mag. in 1962. Although it isn’t officially part of this Winchester family of cartridges, it’s based on the same case. First, the 30/338 is not a shortened version of the 300 win mag, but the 300 win mag is a lengthen version of the former, and the longer part is the shoulder is pushed forward. Since the bullets must be seated deeper in the 300 win mag case, case capacity is reduced, leaving about the same capacity as the 30/338. The OAL length is almost the same, both designed to be used in a standard length action. Performance out of equal barrel lengths is almost identical, depending on the rifle more than the diff in case. The 300 win mag’s shoulder was extended more for marketing than increasing velocity. The 30/338 is very similar to the 308 Norma Mag, with some minor diffs. The 30/338 has been one of the cartridges used in the long-range type of match shooting for a long time. It’s advantage, being a little more effiecient than the 300 win mag, a longer neck, and not having to seat bullets down in the case as far. A lot of people think that a belted magnum is a technological improvement over a case that headspaces on the shoulder. It’s not. Belted magnums have a lot of slop in them. You have a rich man’s gun there, so get your wallet out and start throwing money. Some people necked the .338 down to .22 and they called it the "earsplittenloudenboomer" the muzzle velocity was 9,000 fps, but the bullet turned into a lead mist as it came out the barrel. It’s a reloading-only proposition. You may find a small-time commercial loader who will do it for you, but there is no factory ammo from a major manufacturer, never has been, most likely never will be. It’s pretty popular among the 300 and 600 yard competitors here because the 210 grain Berger VLDs buck the horrible winds we shoot in pretty well. It is very similar to the .308 Norma Mag, fractionally smaller, but still dang similar, to the .300 Win Mag. Um … to be real frank, if you’re not a reloader, buying that gun was a pretty silly thing to do. Sorta like going to college without finishing 5th grade … as a non-reloader, you’re not ready for it nor will you ever approach it’s potential. Sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news. I"m not quite sure why you bought a wildcat if you don’t reload. You most likely need either a new reloading press or very deep pockets to buy ammo if you want to shoot this one. The whole point of wildcatting is to try to come up with a new caliber and experiment with loads for it. It’s a game. For non-reloaders, I doubt that this one will have any advantage over similar standard calibers. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
