30-30 Limitations/Mini 30

Question:

But is it equivalent to the 30-30.  I have read posts stating that the 30-30 has taken more deer than any other cartridge.  If so, the mini 30 should be able to hold its own… Let me start off by saying that I am neither expounding on the virtues of the 7.62×39 cartridge nor saying that it is an acceptable deer cartridge.  However, when comparing the performance of the 7.62×39 versus the 30-30 in a set of Federal ballistics tables, at least based on the numbers, they appear awfully similar.  They show the muzzle velocity for a 123 gr. 7.62×39 at 2300 f.ps. versus 2390 for a 150 gr. 30-30.  At 100 yds. the velocities are 2030 f.p.s. and 2020 f.p.s. respectively.  At 200 yds., 1780 f.p.s. and 1680 f.p.s.  The muzzle energies are 1445 ft/lbs and 1900 ft/lbs respectively.  At 100 yds. the energies are 1125 ft/lbs & 1355 ft/lbs.  At 200 yds. they are 860 ft/lbs and 945 ft/lbs.  I personally would still choose the 30-30 over the 7.62×39 but the numbers would seem to make a good case for the two being ballistically comparable. The .30-30 has done so, for one main reason:  It is the cartridge of choice (highest popularity) for being the FIRST deer rifle cartridge for most hunters.  From this point, everybody fans out to do their own thing.  It is the "hub" in this respect, the point most people pass through before getting "serious". On a personal note, I went to the .270 Win after my .30-30.  …just to be different.  I’m glad I did.  Most think it inferior to the ‘06, but the trajectories are very similar, and downrange energy? – the .270 wins out, with the same bullet weight as the .30-06. >Let me start off by saying that I am neither expounding on the virtues of >the 7.62×39 cartridge nor saying that it is an acceptable deer cartridge. > However, when comparing the performance of the 7.62×39 versus the 30-30 >in a set of Federal ballistics tables, at least based on the numbers, >they appear awfully similar.
