30-30 accelerator(sp?) rounds
Question:
Tim — Check the lever action offerings from Browning if you are really onto the lever. Browning has a cam lock bolt (as opposed to Winchester and Savage’s sliding block) and very sturdy receiver allowing them to offer higher velocity, bigger cartridges. I had a Winchester 30-30 years ago and while now I regret letting it loose for nostalgia reasons, I have never been in a hunting situation with my mid 60’s Remington 721 in .270 and said "gee, that ‘ol 30-30 would be a lot more suitable." The .270 does one hell of a number on groundhog at 200+ yards, too! I would also agree with the previous respondee that bolt action is the way to go — fewer moving parts = less to clean, jam or break. Any round will be iffy when you increase the distance of the bullet from the LAN. Accelerator bullets are generally 22 cal instead of 30 cal…some difference in overall length! Best bet is to forget about accelerators and buy a 22-250, will knock the eyes out of a buzzard at 300 yards..not that I’d shoot a buzzard. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I have used the .30-30 Accelerator loads in the past in both a Marlin >and Winchester version of the old lever guns, and found no problem with >the rounds except for the mediocre accuracy that was the result of the >guns themselves. Tim, I prefer bolt actions and recommend you look at the Remington Seven in .243, .260, or 7mm08 for your first rifle (Pick it in the right caliber and you might not need a second rifle). The Marlin and Winchester .30/30’s are very handy, but if I wanted to hunt deer _and_ varmints with a levergun I’d buy a Browning BLR (the old skinny steel one) in .243 or .257 Roberts, or maybe a Savage 99 in .243, .250 Savage, or 7mm08. Hi all! I’m thinking about getting my first rifle before the end of the year. I’ve been looking at the 30-30, 270 and the 243. I like the lever action of the 30-30’s, also I live and hunt in western PA so a "brush" gun would probably suit me better. I like to hunt groundhogs and such critters as well as deer. Reading through a reloading book I have, I saw a round called a 30-30 accelerator. It has a 55 gr bullet and seems like a very good varmint round for a 30-30 (high velocity–low bullet weight). Has anyone used this round? If so, did you use it in a lever action gun? My main concern would be the pressures and whether the lever action could handle them. I’m very much intrigued with the idea of have one rifle for use during all seasons so I can get really familiar with how it shoots. If anyone has any advice, please voice your opinion.
