30.06 reloads

I got several hundred by participating in the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). You can also procure a pretty decent Garand for around $400 by participating. I suggest a 150 or 165 gr. bullet over about 53 gr. IMR 4350. This is a good middle of the road load which is perfect for whitetails. This is assuming you’re shooting a bolt action or semi-auto sporter designed for modern hunting cartridges, not an M1 Garand. You can do no better than IMR 4350 for 30-06 hunting loads; it’s very versatile and makes good velocity with all standard hunting weight bullets. There was a comprehensive article about a year ago in either American Hunter or American Rifleman on hunting loads for the 30-06. I’d suggest looking it up in a library. Try this: CASE: Winchester BULLET: Speer 165gr Grand Slam POWDER: H380 54gr PRIMER: CCI Large Rifle Magnum If you use the excellent Lake City Match cases, you can use this load, but I would recommend that you back off the powder charge by 4 grains and work back up. For that matter, you might want to do that anyway, since this load is tuned for my rifle. Good Shooting! ..P Please remove the ".ns." in my email address. Kyle: I like the Nosler 165 g. Ballistic Tip for a bullet. I use Remington cases trimmed to lengeh and turned to true with one g. less IMR4350 than the max load suggested in the Lyman Reloading book. This has always been a very accurate load for me. One thing, place your shot carefully as the Ballistic tip is a devestating bullet when properly loaded. I usually shoot my deer in the head or neck unless they are facing me. If you shoot deer through the shoulder with this load, you will likely destroy both shoulders. I once shot a buck at one-hundred and seventy yards head on through center mass and retreived the core of the bullet from the inside of the left ham! As with any handload, you should start cautiously. Load from the minimum loads until you reach the point where you are at the reccommended max loading or you have overpressure indicators. This is especially true if loading for a lever action or an automatic. Never take it for granted that one person’s load will work well in your rifle. The rifle I shoot from, for example, is a commercial Mauser action combined with a freebored Douglass barrel mounted on a custom European black walnut thumbhole stock. Although I have had it for 30 years, it is still capable of shooting minute of angle. When I first got it it shot 1/2" groups from a rest! Being freebored, I am able to keep loads with less pressure than a regular rifle. Incidentally, this is not a good load for larger deer. For Elk, I would switch to the Barnes -X bullet. It has excellent ballistic capabilities and weight retainment on impace.
