.270 HUNTING LOADS

Question:

Hello to the list, I recently picked up a Sako Tikka in the 270 cal.  I plan on using it for hunting, mainly whitetails but who knows what else.  I have been looking at reloading components and was wondering what loads and bullets my fellow hunters on the list have experience with.  Also would it be worth the extra expense to purchase the Redding neck sizing die for .270?  This is the only rifle in this caliber that I own.  I have used the Lee collet dies before but I remember them to be somewhat flimsy.  I am also leaning towards using Varget powder as it is temperature insensitive.  Any advice would be appreciated. Try this load: Bullet: 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip Powder: IMR-4831, 54 gr Case: W-W Primer: WLR OAL: 3.33 Inches I got this load from Handloader Magazine and it works great on whitetail. I get about 2900 fps in a 24 inch barrel. As to neck sizing, I don’t see a whole lot of advantage to neck sizing in a hunting rifle.  It does work well in a tight-necked custom barrel where you are turning the case necks for concentricity.  Buy a full-length die and adjust it for neck sizing if you want, but neck sizing only improves accuracy if you do a whole lot of other stuff as well.  Just my experience. I use the Sierra 130gr.  bullet for target practice and get 2.5" groups at 300 yards.  For hunting try Winchester Fail Safe and Federal Premium Factory loads with trophy bonded premium bullets. Al, I think Varget is way too fast for full power loads in the .270 Win. Generations of satisfied hunters have used 60gr. of H4831 in WW cases behind a good 130gr. bullet.  Experiment with both standard and magnum primers, and go with an OAL limited only by what your magazine and chamber throat will handle.  This load will give you a 300 yard pointblank range on whitetails, and you will never lose one hit in the body.  I recommend full length sizing for hunting rounds, or go to a safe place and run all your rounds through the gun to make sure they chamber if you necksize.  I have not been happy with the one collet necksizer I used.  It didn’t produce as high a bullet pull force as I thought I wanted. Varget would be good for the lighter bullets, but suggest you consider H4350 for 150-160gn. Most of the extruded rifle powders in the Hodgdon range are now temperature insensitive, they just make more noise about Varget in this regard.  Not sure just what’s on the Hodgdon labelling, but this applies to all Hodgdon rifle powders made in Australia by Australian Defence Industries. I use ADI AR2209, local equivalent to H4350, for my .270 loads from 130-150gn. I tend to use AR2208 (Varget equiv.) for the lighter 90-110gn loads, and find both work very well. My rifle doesn’t show any excess pressure signs at all at the ADI max. charges, though my normal loads are 1gn lower. Very clean burning too. Re the neck die, see how you go first with the FLS die backed off to just set the shoulder back, about .001 in. I neck size, but my Rem 700 has a fairly sloppy chamber.
