243 Bullets
Question:
The 100gr. Nosler Partition bullet works very well in my .243. I use Winchester Cases, Win Large Rifle Primers, and IMR 4831 powder. The bullet is seated to max overall length. Groups are about 3" at 200 meters. I do not use a max. load of powder, as I get better results with the middle load. Velocity is 2995 fps. from a 20" barrel. #I have a Tika 243 and shoot regularly for red and sika deer. #What type of bullets would be recommended for game stopping power. #Phil Miller #NEW ZEALAND #(Down Under) Ah, you need some of Nosler’s special USD (up-side-down) bullets. :-) I’ve seen quite a few red deer hinds shot with Norma factory loaded 100gn semi-pointed bullets and they work very well, expanding plenty and putting the hinds down swiftly. They penetrate well enough even on quartering-on shoulder shots. The professional stalker upon whom I impose myself each year takes about 160 hinds each winter and this is all he uses. And he uses the same ammo on the stags too. I’ve seen *one* hind shot with a 100gn Nosler Partition. This one was shot just behind the ribs with a quartering-away shot, passing too high through the lungs passing through the far ribs on the way out. This one did not appear to expand much if at all and although the beast lay down and was (eventually) brought to account, she would have been lost in woodland. (She was shot on the open Scottish hills.) This bullet only hit soft tissue except for a rib on the far side. I’ve seen several pronghorn antelope shot with Nosler’s 95gn Ballistic Tip and they work *very* well on these animals. All the shots were either neck or heart/lung shots. A friend uses them extensively on roe deer (about 50-60lbs live weight), but I don’t know how well these rapidly expanding bullets would work on a red deer’s shoulder. –Jonathan Spencer Keith Borer Consultants – Forensic Scientists Mountjoy Research Centre, Durham, DH1 3UR, England tel: + 44 191 386 6107 fax: + 44 191 383 0686 Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

If your sika run 100-200lbs., and your red deer run 250-400lbs., I can’t recommend anything less than 100gr. Partitions. You might try Barnes "X" bullets, but I’ve never been able to get them to shoot well in any of the guns I’ve tried them in. George

# # I have a Tika 243 and shoot regularly for red and sika deer. # # What type of bullets would be recommended for game stopping power. I’ve used 100 grain Remington Corelokt with fine accuracy out to 400 meters (on the range) and very good game performance loaded over a grain or two below maximum charge (depends on whose manual you read) of IMR4350. I also used a 95 grain Partition on a fork buck Whitetail a few years back. He was trotting almost directly toward my stand about 40 yards out when I hit him just inside the left shoulder; the Nosler took out a couple ribs, the left lung, and ended up somewhere south of the diaphragm but did not exit. The buck sprinted about 100 yards and piled up. He dressed out at around 120 pounds. I should have probably waited for a broadside double lung shot, but things turned out okay. That said I’m thinking of rebarreling to the .260 Remington, partly to be different, partly to get higher SD 125-140 grain bullets. I don`t know much about roe bucks, but I shot my first white tailed deer with a 90 gr. remington powerpoint, It entered jus in front of the last couple of ribs through the body cavity took out half the liver and exited out the neck he didn`t know what hit him. I was really impressed with the results. My mother boyfriend has taken large mule dear with the same bullet, so I would at least give yhem a try. ps. good hunting Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING
