In New Zealand almost every farmer has one to keep down rabbits, hares, magpies, possums, wild cats and mustelids (weasels, stoats etc). These are all introduced now animals classed as noxious by the government. Possums spread bovine TB.  Rabbits and hares cause serious hillside erosion in some areas.  The cats, magpies and mustelids are all a serious threat to our native birdlife. In short, our country is very grateful to the humble .22! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> hi i am a newbie to this and i was wondering what a .22 rifle is used to > hunt for. > Primarily rabbits, squirrels, crows and similarly sized game if you are > talking about rimfires (.22 Long Rifle).  I have used mine on prairie dogs > but was not happy with the results.  Have also used a .22 LR on coyotes and > was even less happy. > Once you move up to centerfires (.223, .222, .22-250), you can reliably take > game up to small deer with proper bullet selection.  (Not allowed in all > states, though.  Colorado requires a minimum .243 for deer.) > As a newbie, the .22LR is a great place to start.  Ammo doesn’t get any > cheaper!  Next best is the .223 for cheap ammo, although it is a **LOT** > more expensive than .22LR (over $100/1000 rounds instead of about $15/1000). > Welcome to the sport! > Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: >         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Primarily rabbits, squirrels, crows and similarly sized game if you are talking about rimfires (.22 Long Rifle).  I have used mine on prairie dogs but was not happy with the results.  Have also used a .22 LR on coyotes and was even less happy. Once you move up to centerfires (.223, .222, .22-250), you can reliably take game up to small deer with proper bullet selection.  (Not allowed in all states, though.  Colorado requires a minimum .243 for deer.) As a newbie, the .22LR is a great place to start.  Ammo doesn’t get any cheaper!  Next best is the .223 for cheap ammo, although it is a **LOT** more expensive than .22LR (over $100/1000 rounds instead of about $15/1000).
