.22 caliber 60 grain subsonic vs 30 grain hyper velocity for small game
Question:
Which would be better for small game at about 50 yards (or 75 yards max) on a .22 caliber rifle (say a 10/22), the 60 grain subsonic or the 30 grain hyper velocity ammo such as the ones manufactured by Aguila? You need to try several brands/types and see what works best for your gun. samg Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Are we talking long rifle rimfire? If so, 60 grain’s fairly heavy. I use both 34 gr supersonics (Winny Expediter) and 40 grain subsonics (whatever but Magtech at present), both in hollow point. With a moderator fitted, the latter is extremely quiet, the former makes a loud crack. If you’ve got one big target, say the size of a labrador, you might go for the supersonic, but if you hope for multiple targets of this size or smaller, and at this range you’ll do fine with the subs. I’ve killed rabbits out to 100 with subsonics – rather than stopping power, the bigger challenge is learning your trajectory curve and being able to estimate range accordingly. I have never seen 60 grain ,22lr cartridges and don’t know what the point would be. For small game the hyper vel rounds are more explosive but don’t kill any better and except for stingers usually dont shoot as good as the standard 37-38 gr, lrhp ammo. I think the hyper loads are just a sales gimick or a failed attempt to make 22lr into something it’s not. I’d go with the sub sonic, they hyper velocity types usually shoot less acurately, individual rifles exepted. The faster bullets would shoot flatter though. Take a box of each and shoot at varius ranges and see which gives better acuracy. — Good fishing, Matt Moore Visit Matt’s Severum World at: http://www.virtualseeds.com/matt.html / Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Aguila’a hyper-vel stuff throws a wildly erratic pattern out of my guns. The 60 hits about 4" lower than regular .22lr ammo. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I’d go with the sub sonic, they hyper velocity types usually shoot less > acurately, individual rifles exepted.
