Response:
my prefernence is modified choke and #3 steel if shooting in creeks or jump shooting…if pass shooting or on open water, i use a full choke with #1 steel…i generally shoot mallards and blacks…if you shoot a lot of teal or woodies, the first combination would be best… good luck…and where are you hunting – our season has been over for 3 weeks… doc Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

ken, I feel that a #4 2.75 with a mod.lead choke is best for ducks, the problem with a 3 in. shell is the compaction factor of steel shot vs. lead. If you have any other question just ask… Regards, David Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I have had success with both #2 and #4 steel. You have to use steel or some other nontoxic shot. I usually use improved cylinder. Steel patterns much more tightly than lead. I have even used cylinder bore when shooting over dekes. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

With steel shot go with #2 and modified choke for pass shooting and #3 shot and improved cylinder over decoys. For bismuth shot, I’d go with #4 and a modified choke for pass shooting and #6 and an improved cylinder over decoys. sounds right to me … i suffered trying to hit/kill late season divers w/3’s and even some 2’s out of my 3.5" …. next year I’ll have some bismuth 4’s for tough condition late season ducks Henry McNatt III Member of Ducks Unlimited, Wildlife Forever, Safari Club International, Florida Conservation Association, Foundation for North American Wild Sheep, National Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

i use a modified choke now, i would advise not using a full choke because i tried it once and it expanded in my barell and barely got it out. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

i recommend using a modified or better yet improved cyl. with steel as it shoots a tighter pattern. a full will shoot too tight a pattern. as for size, i have found #2 or 1s to be best when hunting flooded rice fields. 4s are just too light with steel although in the ole glory days of lead this was the way to go. also steel is much faster than lead and lighter so it does not travel as far but gets there faster. that is why a largershot size is essential b/c steel does not have the density thus lacks the penetrating knock down power of lead. so rule of thumb-larger shot, wider choke.
