Cleaning your gun??
Question:
I’m relatively new to hunting, (second year) I just got my first "new" shotgun, a Benelli nova camo. I love it. My question is, should you be cleaning your gun after every hunt or skeet shoot or do u do it every so often? Also what do u use to clean it? And should you get it cleaned by a professional once a year or so? Ive hear that "gun scrubber" is good to use? Clean your barrel with a swab after each use. Lightly oil the outside metal parts after each use. This should take approximately 2 minutes of your time. It’s part of the hunt. Clean the rest of the gun according to your manufacturers recommendations. The manual that came with it is good reading (I assume you bought it new…if not, order a manual from the manufacturer…they are usually free). Follow the step by step instructions the first couple times you do it. After that, it will be like second hat. I disassembled my AL391 last week and was amazed at the amount of crud in the action from duck hunting. It still worked. I simply forgot to do the end of season cleaning. It did not rust. Amazing, huh? HH Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I do use gun scrubber at the end of the season and do a real good cleaning of any gun at season end. But during the season I just run a cotton rag down the barrel that has been sprayed with silcon oil and then a dry rag. I do know that if you have been out in the rain or snow it best to clean it. Just do not put away wet. I even had in my backpack a piece of 1/8 rope tied to a old piece of cotton so that I could run it down the barrel to get it dry befor I would put the gun in the case. I have gun over 30 years old that the barrels look like new and these guns have been used not only put on the wall….
