useing 44 pistol

Question:

Go with the advice of the fellow who’s been on 20 bear hunts.  The .44 is really a bit light for bears.  Those that I know of being killed did not go down quickly.  At the very least, use the Federal load with the 300gr. hard cast bullet. Aim to break the shoulder and be prepared to keep shooting. Have someone back you up with at least a .30-06 loaded with Federal Trophy Bonded ammo or a 12ga. loaded with Brenneke slugs. plenty fine. i agree wth most other comments: use a 240gr or 300gr Hornady XTP bullet. Hit him in the boiler room. he won’t go far

Most would say that you are using the "bear minimum." Randy Wakeman Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Ok to use, assuming 44 magnum (not special)ammo and you are a good shot. Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

More than OK, should work great especially with 300 grain Hornady XTP loads. Spy Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

44mag. is not considerd to big for any big-game hunting.Black bears are usually tough to put down…they almost always run to the nastiest spot they can find, even with solid hits from rifles. All their fur and fat leave little in the way of blood trail. I suspect many are lost due to this, and that they can cover alot of ground quick after the initial shot.I’ve been in on 20+ bear kill’s and I’ve only seen 2 that died instantly. One hit in the skull at 40yrds with 7mag and the other with a bow at 20ft.,spine shot(ran in circle) I would choose a 240gr bullet Hornady xtp is a good choice.TRY to break a shoulder or spinal cord. Keep you’re range close and be prepared for good follow-up! Just because bear doesnt fall over quick, doesnt mean he’s not hit! I think the 454 casul would be a better choice for bear myself…or a 12guage with slugs. Good Luck!
