Proposed Hunting and trapping bans in N.H. FAIL!
Question:
Most of us know about the Hunting/trapping bans that have passed in some states over the last few years. It has been a cause for worry since the AR’s have hit on the method of attacking singular types of hunting as a way of banning everything one piece at a time. Basically the Divide and Conquer method of setting hunters/trappers against one another. Well, one battle has gone our way. In New Hampshire this year an effort was made this year to 1) Ban all trapping using leg hold and connibear traps. 2) Ban all hunting of bear and deer using any type of bait luring 3) Ban all hunting of bear employing dogs. These bills were supported by a number of senators and house reps including Senators Cohen:Dist 24, Wheeler:dist 21, and Roberge:Dist 9. It should be noted the Burt Cohen (Dist 24) has long been active in anti-hunting efforts on the state level and is surely the most disreputable of the group. The Public forums were attended by number up crackpot animal rights groups including PETA and Defenders of Wildlife, however they were greatly outnumbered by the sports men and women of this state. I’m happy to say that all of bills were soundly defeated!!! and by more than a small margin. No doubt Cohen and his fellow AR toadies will be back next year and no doubt they will continue to have outside help in their battle to force their way of life on everyone around them. The sports men and women of this state will still be here and ready! John

The trouble with fighting this type of battle is, you have to win every time, they only have to win once. Any thought to trying what Alabama did, putting the right to hunt and trap in the constitution? Also, one strategy I’ve thought up (but have not used much, and so don’t know how well it works) is this: In an age where people are supposed to be tolerant, and considerate about other’s culture, why is it that such an important part of AMERICAN culture, that which drove the founding and exploration of our country (fur trade) is under assault? (followed by a quick explanation of how oversized deer herds in NE Illinois are harming native plant diversity, how grassland birds are declining, due in part to predation by raccoons, coyotes, etc.) Opinions? — Regards, Pat If no one expects anything from you, it’s easy to deliver. http://www.prairienet.org/~pcollins
